There are a number of Sten sub machine guns in the film and at one point Captain Cotton shouts 'everyone grab your Stens'. Although the Sten gun was available at the time it was never used by the LRDG. They preferred the American pre-war Thompson sub machine gun which they carried throughout the war.
At the fuel dump and in the following chase German troops are also seen firing British Bren and Sten guns.
The German armored car that attacks the column is a completely fictitious design based on a car or small truck chassis.
The German vehicles are all of British or American design, with the ubiquitous M3 half track featuring throughout the second half of the film.
The vehicles of choice for the LRDG at the time the film is set were Chevrolet rear wheel drive trucks with the art deco style waterfall radiator grill. Trucks 1 and 2 in the 5 truck column are Dodges of a similar design. The three remaining vehicles are the correct type but they generally remain in the near/far distance for most scenes.
The ledges on the bulkhead (scuttle) in front of the driver and passenger are meant to simulate aero screens (small racing style wind screens (windshields)) with canvas coverings, in some close ups they are obviously pieces of wood.
Truck 3 can be seen with a loose bonnet (hood) from the start of the patrol and when truck 1 bogs down in the sand, truck 3 can be seen hitting a rut and the bonnet (hood) jumping up and almost falling off.
