Faith Domergue, Jeff Morrow, and Rex Reason in This Island Earth (1955)

Goofs

This Island Earth

Edit

Continuity

Ruth's attire changes several times between the formal dinner and she and Ruth being taken aboard the alien spacecraft. Initially she is wearing a white cocktail dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline, and no jewelry. Later, her dress has a higher neckline and she is wearing a pearl necklace. Still later, the necklace is gone, the dress is pale lavender, and the neckline is off-the-shoulder. In at least one scene, she seems to be wearing a blouse with a darker skirt.
In the last scene of the car chase, just before it gets blown up, the steering wheel changes from the left side to the right side.
When Dr. Mecham is in the lab after he returns from Washington, his assistant says he ordered two XC condensers and he got two beads in the mail. He said he had tested one and it went to 33,000 volts. They test it again and it disintegrates at 35,000 volts. They then take the 2nd XC condenser and attempt to drill it.
When Cal and Joe begin the first experiment in the lab, Joe is not wearing glasses. They appear a few moments later, after a cut-away.
Ruth's hair is flat and wet when she and Cal jump into a lake. It looks damp and curly moments after.

Factual errors

When Faith Domergue and Rex Reason first enter their new lab and see the orange cat, Faith tells Rex the cat is named "Neutron" because "he's so positive". Any scientist, especially a nuclear fission expert, should know that the proton that is positive; a neutron has no charge.
After trying to drill into the bead, Dr. Meacham remarks "A diamond drill, the hardest element we got". As a scientist he would know that diamond is not an element. It is an allotrope of Carbon, which is an element.
The Converter tube handles are magnetic, but since the hands of the humans are not, their hands would not be stuck to the handles.
When Dr. Mecham gets into the T-33 to leave at the beginning of the movie, he casually tosses his case into the back seat and climbs into the front seat. No pilot would ever have something unsecured in the cockpit where it could get caught in the controls. The US Air Force prohibited cameras in the back seat of F4s because a film can got stuck in the ejection mechanism and caused a fatality when the ejection seat failed.
As the ship leaves for Metaluna, Earth is shown on the view-panel, becoming smaller very rapidly. Several minutes later, the ship becomes very hot, and Exeter says they are going through a "thermal barrier". Then there is discussion of leaving Earth's gravity. Both of these events would have occurred long before Earth become so small on the view-panel.

Revealing mistakes

When Cal flies back from Washington D.C. the numerals on the airplane are backwards. The film has been flipped.
When Ruth and Cal get into the small airplane and it begins to shake because of the explosion, in the far shot of the swerving plane only one person - the actual stunt pilot - sits in the cockpit.
As the trio returns to Earth, the panels in the background of the control room brighten, but the center one has a visible tear, revealing them to be made of paper.
When Cal Meacham is asked to move the lead slab closer to the Interocitor, before Exeter burns a hole through it, a circular, discolored area is visible in the center of the slab, where the special effects incendiary cap is concealed.
When Exeter first talks to Dr. Meacham and Adams in his office, he shows them his Interocitor, located in a large closet next to the door to the hallway. The closet's door is flush to the wall with the office door. When they are out in the hallway, the outside wall is also flush, which means there was no place for the Interocitor in his office.

Miscellaneous

When Cal & Ruth are running to make it to the yellow Stinson airplane to try & make an escape - Cal starts taxiing with the wind. Airplanes always take off and land into the wind. They don't actually show the plane lift off - so more then likely the plane back taxied to the end of the dirt runway, make a u-turn then took off into the wind. You can clearly see the windsock indicating wind direction.
Ruth is sent to pick Cal up on his arrival. As they drive off to leave she clearly does not reverse back far enough to enable the car to miss the aircraft as she then pulls forward. The scene is cut just as she would have reversed back a second time, or hit the plane.
At 7:31 after Cal lands at the Ryberg airfield he is seen standing next to the jet, he had no way of getting to the ground.

Anachronisms

The aircraft flown by Meecham between DC and his plant airfield-~3:45 mark-is shown in reverse image, evidenced by the aircraft's call numbers being backwards.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

About an hour into the movie, when the helmsman says "Now in fourth quadrant", his mouth says something different and moves considerably longer. The same thing happens again about two minutes later, when he announces "Entering ionized layer".
When Cal Meacham's jet "flames out", the jet engine still sounds like it's running.
The first time Cal and Ruth get in the plane, there is no sound when Cal shuts the door.

Crew or equipment visible

Wires are visible on the comet weapon.

Plot holes

When Cal and Ruth are on the ship, some aliens are leaving the compression tubes in preparation for Metaluna's atmosphere. Cal and Ruth go into the tubes to undergo the same process. If Cal and Ruth were not yet compressed, and the aliens were, they should not logically be able to be in the same room at the same time. The pressure would not be hospitable to one group or the other.
When the two doctors are aboard Exeter's ship, their hands grasp the metal bars. Exeter said it was because the bars were magnetized. Human hands are not made of metal.
No one, not even the humans, seem to consider that Zagons would eventually come to Earth. The Metalunas, including Exeter, don't even suggest that this is a good reason to work with them. Once Metaluna is gone, it seems to be the end of it.
