Jean Byron, Richard Carlson, and King Donovan in The Magnetic Monster (1953)

Goofs

The Magnetic Monster

Edit

Continuity

When the hardware store calls Power and Light the store address is noted down as 918 Lincoln but when the OSI Investigators arrive and park at the front of the hardware store the address on the entrance door is 9439.
When loading the Selenium on board a jet fighter, a T-33 is shown. However, when flying the Selenium to Nova Scotia an F-86 is shown with its drop tanks attached. Yet the narration indicates that they were dropped.
The jet the creature is loaded into is different than the one shown taking off and refueling.
After an engine on flight 17 goes out and it is returning to the airport an exterior shot in the air and on the ground shows that it is an unpainted TWA Lockheed Constellation with all engines running. Next it is a painted white TWA Lockheed Constellation passing the control tower. The same aircraft is shown parked.
(at around 1 min) When a girl is loading cards into the M.A.N.I.A.C. the narration indicates that it is 11:55 however the clock on the wall indicates 10:55.

Factual errors

In the early scene in the hardware store, when the scientists toss washers up to the ceiling to determine a magnetic source, the the washers roll and spin before settling on the ceiling, just as some coins would do so if dropped on the floor. A magnetic force strong enough to magnetize much heavier objects in the store would have pulled the washers directly to the ceiling without the extraneous movement.
The Canadian scientists describe how cold it is in the bottom of the mine shaft. Mines get warmer the deeper they go. But this mine is water-cooled because it is under the ocean floor.
Right after flight 17 is told that an engine might quit one of them does and the co-pilot indicates that it is the starboard engine. Later shots show a 4 engine Lockheed Constellation. On a 4 engine aircraft engines are identified as one, two, etc.
As the element is being flown east in the jet, the voice-over says the jet is being refueled over Kansas. Yet below we see extensive mountains, obviously not in Kansas.
Late in the movie, a statement is made that combining nuclei & atoms form matter but they already are both separate types of matter. They actual form atoms. Then they mention that since they have a sample of the radioactive element, they can now test it's chemical composition but an element's composition, unlike molecules, is composed of the same type atoms.

Revealing mistakes

The set used for a Canadian power plant was left over from an old German science fiction film. The control panel contained a large switch shaped like a Teutonic cross.
The radiation suits used in the film have no overshoes, as real radiation suits have.

Plot holes

In the hardware store the scientists use tacks and washers to check magnetic fields of objects and determine the source of the magnetism, but any magnetic field strong enough to move lawnmowers and irons would have magnetized the smaller items so they stuck to each other, unable to move independently.
When the flight (#17) that is carrying Dr. Denker and the new element is called back to the airport, the radio call is crystal clear - despite the fact that element, being magnetic, causes a tremendous amount of interference with radio, TV, and radar, as explained in earlier narration.
Destroying a dangerous radioactive element is accomplished by feeding it electricity from the world's largest power plant, and the strain put upon the plant wrecks it. It would have been much simpler to divide the element and destroy it piecemeal at several power plants.

Character error

The man in the hardware store asks to be connected to "The Department of Scientific Investigation" but it should be "The Office of Scientific Investigation".
