- Opening crawl: The American frontier, late in the last century, was a hotbed of violence. It took daring, and desperate courage, for a frontiersman to survive - whether he lived by breaking the law, or by enforcing it. This is the 'true' story of three of these desperate men - 'true' not because it happened exactly as portrayed, but because human nature is what it is...
- [first lines]
- [the posse has cornered the men they've been pursuing]
- Pete Coleman: Put that away! We don't want to shoot 'em.
- Dick Cable: Bill, look! The marshals!
- Bill Devlin: Yep.
- Dick Cable: They'll never take me alive!
- Bill Devlin: [pouring a cup of coffee] Don't you want to drink the rest of it?
- Dick Cable: Are you loco?
- Bill Devlin: I can't start the day without my coffee.
- Ed Larkin: What is this?
- Tom Denton: It's from District Marshal Coleman. It's his statement that Matt was wearing a marshal's badge and working with him on the day of the train robbery.
- Ed Larkin: Well this is pretty good evidence. I know Pete Coleman. Too bad you boys weren't at the trial.
- Tom Denton: At the trial? We just heard about it last week! Your justice is a lot faster than your railroad.
- Guard: [Matt is about to be hung]
- Guard: Do you want a blindfold, Matt?
- Matt Denton: No. If I'm going to perform, I want to see my audience.
- Farmer: Say, did you fellows come from town?
- Tom Denton: Yeah.
- Farmer: Did you see the hangin?
- Fred Denton: Naw, we couldn't wait.
- Farmer: I couldn't make it myself. Hated to miss it.
- Matt Denton: Yeah... So did I.
- Laura Brock: Wires to every town along the line. They'll never get home alive.
- [thumbing through telegrams listing the Denton's alleged crimes]
- Pete Coleman: Horse thieves, murderers, bank robbers, rustlers...
- Laura Brock: Pete, there'd have to be a hundred of them to do all those things!
- Tom Denton: You know how we got into this. We were forced to turn outlaw. All I wanted was a chance to give Laura a decent life somewhere else.
- Mrs. Denton: You mean to say you turned outlaw for Laura? Then you have no excuse for ever robbing or killing again. Laura is dead.
- Tom Denton: Fred, after today they'll forget all about the Youngers and the James boys; it'll be us! None of them ever took two places at once.
- Fred Denton: That's no reason.
- Tom Denton: It's reason enough for me now!
- [a lovely woman smiles at Bill just before as the outlaws start the robbery]
- Bill Devlin: I hope she don't have money in the bank.
