Robert Newton in Treasure Island (1950)

Goofs

Treasure Island

Edit

Continuity

When Jim grounds the jolly boat and jumps out onto the beach, Silver immediately levels his pistol at him. In the next shot, the pistol is pointed at a right angle to Jim, then Silver levels it again.

Factual errors

Throughout the film the frizzens were often open and the flashpans exposed on the supposed flintlock pistols and muskets, but the guns fired anyway. These were obviously stage guns, but as a factual point the frizzen must be closed on the pan and there must be a poof of smoke before a flintlock gun will fire.
When the pirates approach the inn we hear very strong winds but their clothing is not disturbed at all.
When Jim Hawkins is climbing the rigging to get away from the pirate, the sky is blue with white fluffy clouds but it's supposed to be night.

Revealing mistakes

When Blind Pew leaves the Pub on his own, he reaches for the latch on the door, which he could not see.
The first time that Long John Silver is seen, there is a focus shot of his missing leg. However, as the scene continues it is obvious the actor is walking on two legs. It appears very hard for him to move on the crutch when forced by the camera shot's scrutiny to do so. Then, at other times obscured by camera angle, he is permitted to feign the condition with significantly less stress on the crutch.
As Jim Hawkins is climbing down the mast rigging after shooting Israel Hands, the ship is shown adrift and moving toward the shore. But in the overhead shot looking down toward Jim, there is no indication of movement seen in the water below and the ship appears to be stationary. Later, when Long John Silver and Jim are being rowed out to the ship, at least one shot of the two in the row boat's stern similarly shows no sign of the boat moving through the water, but merely floating in place.
