Synopsis

  • A comedy film about British politics, featuring the decline of an aristocratic family. It is set in the aftermath of World War II, when the United Kingdom was experiencing sweeping political changes.

    Tony, Viscount Pym is the heir to a long line of politicians, who have been elected in their his home constituency for several generations. Pym is currently serving his term in the British Army, but requests a leave to serve as a candidate in the upcoming elections. This request is a mere ruse. He actually wants time off to marry his fiancee, the wealthy American June Farrell. His family's wealth is largely depleted, and he needs her money.

    The plan backfires. Pym is actually nominated as a candidate by the Conservative Party, despite his political inexperience. He faces Cleghorn,an experienced politician who stands as the candidate of the Labour Party. Pym loses the election and loses his home constituency. His family calmly accepts the news. but June loses faith him. His engagement is in danger.

    Cleghorn is soon made a peer, moving from the House of Commons to the House of Lords. The parliament seat is empty, and an election will decide who will succeed Cleghorn. Pym wants to be a candidate again, as he sees it as his chance to impress June. He decides to switch political allegiances, and is nominated as a Socialist candidate.

    Pym loses the election again. The new member of Parliament is Beecham, Pym's family butler. He won because he is a a steadfast Conservative, and attracted the Party's loyalists. Pym is left empty-handed.
