In this program, James presents a series of "mothergrams" in which he reads out rhyming trivia questions and gives prizes to the contestants with the correct answers. Next, he challenges audience members to present him with a sentence or phrase and gives them a prize if he cannot quickly think of a rhyming retort, also posing another "mothergram" question about a poet expelled from West Point, though several people are stumped by the answer. James then reads out a "Mother of the Day" letter from a viewer in which he discusses his own commendable mother, and James sends her a fancy watch as a prize. In a comedic sketch scene, Meade portrays a mother hurrying to get ready for an outing, frustrated by the mischievous antics of her young son, played by James. The hosts then ask the audience their opinions on dealing with a child who plays in the lawn sprinklers and muddies their clothes, as "little Dennis" had done, and the mothers all offer their various points of view regarding spanking and punishment. In the final segment, James chats with opera singer Judith Doniger, recently returned from a trip to Mexico, and she briefly discusses her three children and her plans for a concert in October at New York City's Town Hall, at which she will perform varying types of music in several languages.
