Myrna Loy, William Powell, and Asta Jr. in Song of the Thin Man (1947)

Goofs

Song of the Thin Man

Edit

Continuity

Much is made of the murder weapon being an antique muzzle-loading pistol, but earlier in the film the victim was shot with a gun sporting a modern barrel and lacking the noise and smoke that a muzzle-loading pistol would produce.
The taxicab in which Nick and Nora arrive at Parkview Terrace is a pre-war model, about ten years older than the one in which they've previously been riding.
When Nick opens the door of Fran's apartment, he jostles her dead body so that it is lying face down with her right arm bent and the right hand tucked palm-down underneath the stomach. However, in the next shot when Nick enters, her right arm is in a straight position down the side of her body and her right hand is facing palm-up.
At about the 6 minute mark in a close-up shot of Gloria Grahame her hair is shorter than in the previous long shot.
When Nick and Nora follow the car at 4.30 in the morning, the street is full of people.

Factual errors

There is a huge ventilation duct in the ballroom on the ship. These ducts are on deck and never within an interior space.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

In Nick's flashback of the baby's birth, his hair is parted on the side. From 1934 through 1941, he parted it in the middle.

However, men (as well as women) may change their hairstyles, especially over the course of years.
When Fran Page is singing in the audience, she is not using a microphone. Realistically, no one would be able to hear her singing clearly without a microphone. Of course, if one allows for artistic license, this fact can be ignored; however, later on, the bandleader is using a microphone in order to be heard. Therefore, the film is inconsistent with its microphone liberties.

Singing in the audience could be meant to convey a personal relation with the nearby patrons as opposed to ensuring everyone in the room can hear the song - a more "personal touch" than would be expected from the bandleader.

Revealing mistakes

Toward the end, when Buddy is performing the clarinet and starting to freak out while watching the audience, his mouth stops blowing out air. Supplying air to the instrument makes it audible; however, the clarinet can still be heard playing despite there being no flow of air.
When Drake is arguing with Brant, the band members in the background packing up. However, in the following shots, the background of the musicians goes back and forth between a still image and live action.

Crew or equipment visible

When the thug on the boat throws the knife at Asta, the string that guides it to it's target in the door is visible.
When Asta lifts his paw to his eye in the baggage car, the wire controlling his paw is visible.

Character error

When Nick finds Phyllis's necklace on the floor, he picks it up to give it to her. However, Phyllis's reaction to having lost the necklace is half a beat too early. She reacts to Nick's voice and not the sight of the necklace.
