Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles in Jane Eyre (1943)

Goofs

Jane Eyre

Edit

Continuity

When Jane is first awakened by Adele, she has long thick braids. At other times, she has a small bun at the base of her neck. There is no way the volume of such braids would fit into such a tiny bun.
When Jane arrives at Thorndale and alights from her carriage, the dark shot is immediately brightened by rays of light beaming from an open door (off screen to the left). There is then an immediate cut to the entrance, and the room has no lights at all, so such an effect could not occur.

Factual errors

The text of "Jane Eyre, Chapter 1" that appears on screen does not correspond to the text of Bronte's novel. Chapter 1 actually opens, "There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and a rain so penetrating, that further out-door exercise was now out of the question."
Although there was no ice readily available in the early 19th century the bathing of Rochester's swollen ankle in hot water would be the exact opposite treatment recommended.

Revealing mistakes

When the carriage takes Jane away from the George Inn towards Thornfield, it leaves only a single set of tracks - although it's going back up the same road it just came down.

Crew or equipment visible

When Rochester and Blanche sever connections, folds can be seen in the backdrop of the sky.

Character error

When the girls are lined up at the Lowood school for their medical inspections, each says "Ahhhh" with her mouth open as the doctor passes. The doctor, however, never even looks in their mouths, and their heads aren't tilted so that he could. The doctor, who is a "good" character, is just going through the motions or doesn't understand the basics.
