Horror legend John Carradine plays painter, puppeteer and strangler Gaston Morel in 19th Century France. He called it his favourite role and he certainly puts in a fine and chilling performance. My TV guide described it as a crime thriller but Bluebeard is much darker than that, it is also horror. The film has some suspenseful sequences and the murder scenes are quite strong for the time. Some of the action takes place in the sewers, reminiscent of the Phantom of the Opera. I wish I could score it higher than 6/10 but two things prevented me from doing so. Firstly Paris is populated by people with American accents, though Carradine does at least try to sound French. Secondly the orchestral musical score is non-stop, at times it almost drowns out the actors' voice, very irritating. Made by PRC on a small budget credit must go to the makers for producing a good looking piece of film noir, just a pity about about the annoying soundtrack.
