Jennifer Jones in The Song of Bernadette (1943)

Goofs

The Song of Bernadette

Edit

Continuity

When Bernadette and the other girls go to gather wood, the other girls cross the stream after removing their shoes and socks, at the same time telling Bernadette not to wade in the stream because the water is too cold and she is sickly. Later, she does, and the water is warm. All three are barefoot. However, when they grab their bundles of wood to run home, Bernadette has her shoes and socks back on.
When the Lady asks Bernadette to wash herself in the spring, Bernadette digs a hole and smears her face and hands with dark black mud. Moments later as the onlookers mock her, her aunt and mother take her away and the mud is gone from both her hands, while only slight fingermarks of mud remain on her cheeks.

Factual errors

The scene where Bernadette kisses the feet of the Virgin Mary did not happen. The actual grotto shows that the niche where the Blessed Mother was seen is too high to reach for any human.
In the beginning of the movie, when Soubirous goes out to seek a job for the day, we see the name of the street written as "Rue des Petites Fossées". The name is actually "Rue des Petits Fossés".
When the doctor examines the stone cutter's eyes in his office he is obviously using a small hand held battery powered lamp device and you can see when he turns it on. This is 1858 so there are no light bulbs or batteries yet, the device would have been a bulky optical device with an alcohol flame for light source or a reflective mirror using a remote light source.
At 78:20 minutes - the business hours sign incorrectly has the wrong times "DOCTEUR T. DOZOUS - CONSULTATION - de 1h à 5h" and the correct times are "de 13h à 17h".

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

One of the reports to the Commission appears to be dated February 31, 1860. However, this is not the case. The date is actually written as February 3rd, 1860. In the word "3rd", the letter "d" after the number "3" is clear. However, the letter "r" is written in such a way that it could be mistaken as the number "1".

Revealing mistakes

When Sister Marie Therese removes the holy card from Bernadette's hand in the classroom scene, her hand is shown in a close-up wearing long, tapered fingernails, with a clear gloss on them. No nun in the 1800's would ever display such an affectation.
Repeatedly when the sunlight shines through the windows the shadow of the windows is on the ceiling. This would only be possible if it was reflecting off of water outside the windows.
When the crowd comes to see the miracle, Bernadette first approaches the niche, and kisses the lady's feet, with a golden rose, on each one. Even though this is shown at a low angle, one can clearly see this is a statue, and not a living person.
Several times, newspaper articles are shown to add clarity to scenes. The intended articles are in English, but the surrounding articles are in French.

Anachronisms

When Bernadette's sisters hike their skirts to cross the river, one of them is obviously wearing 1940s panties.
To discourage pilgrims to Lourdes, the mayor issues a proclamation that the spring water cannot be consumed until it is tested by a chemist. An official notice is printed up in a classic and very recognizable typeface named Goudy Old Style. The type designer Frederick Goudy wasn't even born until 1865, 7 years after that proclamation was posted in Lourdes.
In the early 1860s when the doctor takes the oral temperature of the Emperor's son. The thermometer wasn't invented until 1867.
