Contemporary articles in the entertainment press announced Irene Dunne and Cary Grant were to play the leads in this film. Ginger Rogers was then reported to have replaced Dunne, who had a prior commitment. Then Ruth Warrick was to be cast as Ellen. Finally Jane Wyatt was assigned the role after Dorothy Comingore refused the part.

According to 1944 news items in HR, writer Harry Kingston filed a piracy suit against RKO in federal court, charging that the studio used his play Cocktail Waves as a basis for this film. The suit was later dropped.
