Myrna Loy, William Powell, Richard Hall, Sam Levene, and Asta in Shadow of the Thin Man (1941)

Goofs

Shadow of the Thin Man

Edit

Continuity

When Nick and Nora go to the restaurant and order the Sea Bass, Asta breaks away and runs through the crowd and causes a brawl. When he starts running towards the revolving door, he has a leash attached. When he enters the revolving door, the leash is gone. When Asta returns to Nick, the leash is back.
When Nick Jr. is trying to get Nick to drink milk, Jr., is alternately holding/not holding his glass between shots.
When Nick visits the apartment of Claire Porter, they're seated at a small table, with a centerpiece of flowers floating in water. Nick is smoking a cigarette. The cigarette has burned down to a very short length. Then, as he gets up, the cigarette is seen to be almost a full length cigarette.
Prior to Nick going into "Whitey" Barrow's apartment, when the police have already searched it, the camera cuts to Asta with the leash on the floor. Next shot is Nick opening the door with the leash in his hand.
When Nick is pulled over by the motorcycle cop for speeding, the window on Nora's side of the car changes from being up when as the car slows down, to completely down when it stops.

Factual errors

When the Police arrive at the wrestling arena; there is a pharmacy across the street indicating that they are on 48th Street. However, it shows the traffic is going in two directions. This is incorrect because 48th Street goes in one direction from West to East.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

When pulled over by the cop on the Bay Bridge, it shows two-way traffic on the top deck of the bridge. This is wrong now, but was correct at the time the movie was made.
When Nick and Nick Jr. are sitting on the park bench, junior addresses his dad as "Nick". Actually, he does this twice. But it is not a goof. In some families kids are allowed to call their parents by their first names.

Revealing mistakes

After Nick gets off of the merry-go-round, there is a close-up of Asta also exiting the merry-go round. If you look at Asta's front paws you can see the straps and fishing line used to pull his legs out from under him. This was done to make him lose his balance and give him the appearance of being dizzy from riding around in circles.
When the Lieutenant shows Nick Clara's criminal history; they have an entry for age and she is listed as 30. However in reality they would need to have an entry for her date of birth which would then determine her correct age at whatever moment in time they are looking at her record.
At the end of the Merry-Go-Round when Nora gets her son; a couple of the child actors are looking at the camera as well as at the action of the principal actors.
When Nick goes to investigate the shower room after hours, the light coming in through the window goes out a beat before he turns on the lights in the shower room.
When the Lieutenant hands Clara's criminal history to Stephens; the exact same close-up footage used when Nick is holding and looking at it earlier at the restaurant, is also used when Stephens is holding and looking at it.

Miscellaneous

When Clara slaps Stephens the audio of the slap is one of flesh on flesh. Clara was wearing gloves therefore the sound of the slap normally would have been muted. However in order to effectively create the illusion of a slap they had to use the flesh-on-flesh sound.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

When Nora is executing wrestling moves on Nick; they exchange words. However, the sound of their voices is not heard.
When Claire runs out of the apartment after snatching the bracelet box; she opens and slams the door. However, no door sounds are heard.
When Paul and Whitey are fighting the audio has gaps. Apparently, all the noise that is heard comes from the Foley artist however not the entire sequence of events is covered. What is mainly being reproduced is the banging of the furniture with some footsteps and only one grunt when the fight ends.

Crew or equipment visible

When Nick returns to the locker room at the race track, and Asta is scared off by the black kitten, Nick passes an office. You can see a man in the reflection of the window. He is wearing a white shirt and appears to be giving hand commands to Asta. His movements mimic Nick's at first, but when Nick turns to head for the shower room, the man in the white shirt stays in the same position.
When all the characters are wrestling Major Sculley to take his gun away watching is Asta under a Mink wrap. A barely visible fishing line attached to the Mink wrap is used to pull the wrap down to cover Asta.

Errors in geography

Bringing back Sam Levene as Lt. Abrams of the San Francisco PD from After the Thin Man (1936) is a welcome addition to the cast. However, a San Francisco homicide detective wouldn't have had jurisdiction at the racetrack. The only possible area horse racetrack would have been Berkeley's Golden Gate Fields (opened 1941), which is well outside the San Francisco city limits and is reached by driving across the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge (where Nick got his speeding ticket and police escort to the track).

Character error

When Nick is visiting Claire Porter she grabs a camellia flower and then smells it before pinning it to Nick's jacket. This was a character error on her part because when Nick smells it she informs him the camellias don't have a fragrance. If that's the case and it is; then there was no reason for her to smell it.
