I'm always reluctant to give a high rating to what on the surface that seems like an innocuous comedy, especially one as corn bred as this Weaver family entry from Republic. But this is definitely one worth the praise, better even than the best of the Ma and Pa Kettle movies, and certainly way above other corny comedies starring the likes of Bob Burns, Lum and Abner and radio favorites Fibber McGee and Molly. The Weavers apparently were popular with the rural trade so their films go past that old newspaper publicity headline "Hicks nix Stix pics".

When their home is destroyed by a tornado, the Weavers find themselves in financial trouble, but the discovery of an an old book in the rubble signed as an I. O. U. By founders of the government gives them the opportunity of a claim against the treasury department. Of course there's the matter of red tape, government workers trying to con them, jealous neighbors and of course their own materialism coming out of nowhere. The younger Weavers find adventure and romance, Ma June (getting the best lines with very funny delivery) becomes a fashion plate, and the government struggles to make payment. Lots of lessons from this one, plus some good musical numbers. Definitely above average among stix pics!
