Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino in High Sierra (1941)

Goofs

High Sierra

Edit

Continuity

When Roy Earle, traveling under an alias, first meets Pa Goodhue at the gas station in the desert, he introduces himself only as "Collins". However, when they meet for the second time after the car accident in Tropic Springs, Pa immediately greets him as "Roy," even though Earle had never offered a first name.
When Algernon was fishing on the dock using a window shade spring roller, the fish shown underwater biting his bait was a trout, and the fish he catches and holds up in the next scene is a perch.
The first morning after Roy arrives in the Camp, he is shaving right before Marie comes in to the cabin. His progress shaving changes between shots. Roy is alternating between shaving the right side and then the left side. Then he's back to shaving the left side, but it hasn't been touched. When Marie comes in, it's almost done, then suddenly it's all clean and dry.
When Roy Earle leaves Indiana, he's driving a 1937 Plymouth coupe. As he's approaching California, the car is a 1938 (similar to the '37 but shorter, wider grille). Later, it changes back to the '37, then to the '38 again.
After Pard jumps into the car with Marie and Roy, it's seen through the back window that the car makes a sharp turn to the left but Roy doesn't turn the steering wheel.

Factual errors

Algernon's fishing exercise produces a bass, catching it from what strongly resembles a small tropical fish aquarium where a 1" zebra fish is seen swimming.
When Roy and Marie are traveling at night along highway 395, they witness a lovely sunrise over the Sierras. There are two problems with that though. The part of the Sierras shown are far north of where they would have been. But more importantly, highway 395 is EAST of the Sierras so they could have seen only a sunset.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

Revealing mistakes

During the chase up Mt. Whitney, the dust from the camera car can be seen kicking up in front of Roy's car and the police motorcycles.
When Roy Earle stops at the gas station in the desert, he asks the attendant for gas and water. The attendant immediately grabs the water hose and removes the radiator cap with his bare hands despite the fact that the engine and cap should have been hot.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

During the chase scene up the dirt mountain road, the foley is the sound of screeching tires on asphalt or concrete.

Crew or equipment visible

When Roy gets to the door of the mountain store, a crew member's face and shoulders are reflected in the glass.

Errors in geography

Before the chase gets to the point where the road starts going up the mountain, some parts of the chase seem to have been filmed on the road to Horseshoe Meadows instead of on Whitney Portal Road.

Boom mic visible

When Roy is talking to Mendoza at the camp at their first meeting, the shadow of the boom mic is seen in the background between them.

Character error

Roy points to the sky and says that a "twinkling" star is Venus, but planets are recognizable because they do not twinkle.
When Roy meets Red, he says he can't shake hands because he's been cleaning fish. The next day, Marie tells Roy that Red and Babe spend all their time fishing, but they never catch anything.
