When Roy Earle, traveling under an alias, first meets Pa Goodhue at the gas station in the desert, he introduces himself only as "Collins". The part of the Sierras shown are far north of where they would have been. But more importantly, highway 395 is EAST of the Sierras so they could have seen only a sunset.
During the chase up Mt. Whitney, the dust from the camera car can be seen kicking up in front of Roy's car and the police motorcycles.
When Roy Earle stops at the gas station in the desert, he asks the attendant for gas and water. The attendant immediately grabs the water hose and removes the radiator cap with his bare hands despite the fact that the engine and cap should have been hot.

When Roy meets Red, he says he can't shake hands because he's been cleaning fish. The next day, Marie tells Roy that Red and Babe spend all their time fishing, but they never catch anything.
