Pat O'Brien in Knute Rockne All American (1940)

Goofs

Knute Rockne All American

Edit

Continuity

At 16:47, people on the beach disappear, and also footprints in the sand are inconsistent.
At 17:47, the position of Knute and Bonnie changes.
At 26:05, Nieuwland's pencil jumps to his chin.
At 11:02, Knute's elbow goes from next to the bed to on the bed.
At 36:22, as Gipp plays with a blade of grass in his mouth, each cut for several seconds is inconsistent.

Factual errors

The airplane in which Knute Rockne lost his life was the Fokker F-10 tri-moter. The movie uses a metal-winged Ford tri-motor. The F-10 had wooden wings, which failed during the flight due to internal deterioration, causing the crash. The movie seems to indicate that Rockne's plane crashed because of engine trouble.
The movie shows the score of the famous "win one for the Gipper" game as a 7-6 Notre Dame victory over Army. It also showed the score 6-0 in favor of Army at halftime. In fact, the halftime score was 0-0 and the final was a 13-6 Notre Dame victory.
When Notre Dame and Rockne use the forward pass to beat Army, the Army coach exclaims "They can't do that!". However, the forward pass was legal at the time (tho rarely used).
More to the point, 6-0 is the score for a forfeit, making one wonder why the "6-0" at halftime was used in the first place.

Revealing mistakes

When Knute Rockne (Pat O'Brien) first notices George Gipp (Ronald Reagan) kicking a football, a player standing next to Rockne very clearly mouths "Hey You!" (without any sound coming from his mouth) just as Rockne yells the same thing to Gipp.

Miscellaneous

During the game against Army while the players are lying on the ground resting and talking to their coach, a modern High Voltage Electrical Transmission tower can be seen in the background.
The West Point game was played in November, but the weather as shown, hot and dry, is not typical of upstate New York in November.
When Rockne is giving his Gipp speech to the team, he says "tell them to win just one for the Gipper". On his deathbed, Gipp says "ask them to win just one for the Gipper".

Crew or equipment visible

At 34:32 and again 2 seconds later, shadows cross players.
At 34:37, shadow on Gipp's shoulder.

Errors in geography

Rockne's airliner crashed near Bazaar, Kansas, which is flat, with barely any hills. Yet, when the farmer witnesses the crash, there are mountains, or at least high hills, in the background.

Character error

Knute Rockne is born in Norway and as a youngster, tells his father not to speak Norwegian, yet a couple of times in the movie he is referred to as a Swede.
At 41 years old when the film was made Pat O'Brien was much too old in both age and looks to be a college football player early in the film.
