Henry Fonda, Alice Brady, and Marjorie Weaver in Young Mr. Lincoln (1939)

Goofs

Young Mr. Lincoln

Edit

Continuity

When Abe and Ann are walking along the river in Spring it is flowing in one direction. After Ann's death when Abe visits her grave in the winter, the river is flowing in the opposite direction.
Ann's hands change position when talking with Abe about her red hair.
The position of Abe's elbow changes between shots when telling Ann that he might go into law.
When comparing a farmer's dog to Scrub White, Abe's hand leaves the bench between shots.

Factual errors

(Possibly intentional) The 'Almanac Trial' took place in 1858, not in 1837 as is implied in this movie.
After the trial, Steve Douglas confesses that he'd made some remarks about Lincoln that he wanted to publicly retract. The only problem was there were only three people present; Lincoln, Douglas, and Mary Todd. Hardly public.

Anachronisms

Lincoln is shown playing "Dixie" on a Jew's harp. That portion of the film is ostensibly set in the year 1837, but most reliable sources indicate that "Dixie" wasn't written, publicly performed nor published before 1859. During the Civil War, Lincoln was known to be partial to the tune (it was almost as popular in the North in the 1860s as in the South), but it's unlikely he would have heard it in the 1830s.
In the opening scene, where Lincoln gives his campaign speech for election to the Illinois legislature, he states he adheres to the principles of the Whig Party. The scene takes place in 1832 or 1833. If it is the earlier date, he was more than likely a National Republican, but the Whig Party was founded in 1833, in plenty of time for Lincoln to serve as a Whig member of the Illinois House of Representatives, which he did from 1834 until 1842.

Crew or equipment visible

At 41:20 into the film, an extension cord can be seen pulled into the back of the Clays' wagon after Lincoln says "get along, mule."
