Synopsis

  • Sent by the Waterford Rubber Company to secure land and locate Dr. Taylor, a missing scientist, adventurer Dan Burton ventures to the town of Guamao at the jungle's edge. There, he encounters the animosity of both archaeologist Judith Adams and Gallon, the partner of the unscrupulous rubber baron Scipio. At the saloon, bartender Tyran "Tiny" Andrews notices one of Gallon's thugs slip poison into Dan's drink, and after slugging the would-be poisoner, Tiny is fired for starting a fight. A grateful Dan hires Tiny to work with him, and posing as rubber tappers, they sign on as recruits for Scipio's rubber camp upriver. At the camp, Dan once again sees Judith, which leads him to believe that she is involved in Scipio's operation. Upon discovering that the workers have been cruelly abused, Dan begins to document Scipio's crimes, but the guards discover his records and present them to Scipio. Unable to read, Scipio asks Judith to read them to him, and she lies that Dan is writing a book about insects. Entertaining Napoleonic delusions, Scipio decides that Dan should write a book about him and moves him into the big house. That night, Judith confides to Dan that Dr. Taylor, Scipio's demented prisoner, is her father, and Dan tells her that he has been sent to rescue the scientist. Soledad, one of Scipio's men, sees the two together and alerts his boss, who orders Dan's arrest. Judith escapes with her father but is captured the next day by Gallon. Through Scipio's daughter Maria, Dan sends a message to Tiny, instructing him to organize the men to revolt, and together they overthrow the tyrannical despot and free Dr. Taylor. Returning to civilization, Dan and Judith plan their marriage, and Maria and Tiny also decide to wed.
