- Maisie Ravier is a street smart and kind-hearted vaudeville performer. Her latest job takes her from Denver to the outpost of Big Horn, Wyoming to perform in a vaudeville show. However, upon her arrival, she learns that the show has already closed due to everyone going to see the rodeo taking place in town instead. Having no money to leave town, she gets whatever job she can, namely in the rodeo's carnival midway at a shooting gallery. There, she has an auspicious first meeting with Charles Martin - nicknamed Slim - a foreman at a nearby ranch. Slim is partly responsible for Maisie losing that midway job, so decides to help her with money for a train ticket to Chicago. Slim outwardly will do anything to get rid of Maisie, he being shy of any woman due to once being burned by a woman he loved. Slim has other problems in that the ranch is losing money, and his absentee boss, the ranch owner, New Yorker Clifford Ames, and his wife, Sybil Ames, the latter who Slim has never met, are coming for a month long visit. Maisie, upon meeting the Ameses, decides to take a chance and state to them that Slim hired her to be Mrs. Ames' maid for their stay, news which doesn't sit well with Slim. Slim and Maisie learn indirectly that the Ames' visit is not to inspect the books, but is rather a vacation to work on their broken marriage, as Sybil had been caught having an affair. During the Ames' stay, Slim and Maisie fall in love. But the Ames' marital problem, which continues as Sybil is still carrying on with her lover behind Clifford's back, she who only married Clifford for his money, may have an indirect negative impact on Slim and Maisie's future plans as husband and wife.—Huggo
