Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, and Sam Levene in The Mad Miss Manton (1938)

Goofs

The Mad Miss Manton

Edit

Continuity

The film opens with the title character returning to her Manhattan apartment at 3 a.m. She is wearing a sleeveless evening gown. She immediately proceeds to take her dogs for a walk, during which she discovers an apparent murder victim. In fleeing, she loses her gown, and is left in her undergarments. She calls the police, and they arrive in force, in either shirt sleeves or suit jackets. Despite the inescapable conclusion that the film's action is taking place in the summertime, or at least in comfortably warm weather, the title character and her friends spend most of the rest of the movie running around town in their furs-- mostly heavy fox, mink and sable coats.

Revealing mistakes

When Melsa first calls the police at the beginning, the police cars are rushing to the Lane mansion. As they pass "Jones Drug Co" and "Barber Shop", the signs are backwards indicating the film has been flipped over.

Miscellaneous

Hattie McDaniel, who would win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Gone with the Wind" the following year, is listed as "Hattie McDaniels" in the closing credits.

Character error

In a romantic scene in the middle of the film, Melsa tells Peter that she's had dozens of cigarette lighters, but none of them worked. However, at the start of the film when she snoops around the Lane house, she uses a working cigarette lighter as a torch.
