Curiogus Southern Set Crime Melodrama
lchadbou-326-265926 February 2021
Grant Richards is a rather uninteresting lead but thanks to Karen Morley and some colorful character actors in support, this Southern set Paramount crime drama holds the interest. The style is somewhat slow paced possibly due to the Germanic background of emigre director Du Pont. As flood victims board a Greyhound bus, a man who had been sentenced to die has escaped in the confusion. They all land up at a refugee station where it is incorrectly announced by reporter Roscoe Karns that the convict has drowned. Standout playing by Alan Mowbray (who pompously delivers the juicy line, "My equipage becomes a vehicle of mercy") and Esther Dale who smokes and puts on a Southern accent. This all culminates in a somewhat hokey scene where the black servants sing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." A decided curiosity.
