As Captain Ben, Albert and Harbottle are on an African island, it is unlikely that their radio would pick up the BBC and Radio Luxembourg.
It would have needed a very heavy-duty battery to power a valve radio for anything other than very short periods, and judging by the ease with which Will Hay lifted it up this was not the case. Besides, the radio would have stopped working the moment it entered the water.
