Boulder Dam was officially renamed Hoover Dam by Congress in 1937 to recognize President Herbert Hoover, who authorized its construction. It was built between 1931 and 1936, and was completed two years ahead of schedule. The production of this film began three weeks after the dam's dedication ceremony by President Roosevelt on 30 September 1935. At least 100 men died during the dam's construction.
According to contemporary article in Daily Variety, Patricia Ellis replaced Ann Dvorak in the lead role, and the character was changed from a dancer to a singer as a result.

The locomotive of the train Rusty is depicted as leaving town on is a AT&SF steam locomotive #1972, a 2-8-0 arrangement built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1907.
