Charles Laughton in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933)

Goofs

The Private Life of Henry VIII

Edit

Continuity

When Henry has Wriothesley on the table, Wriothesley's hand goes from the table to his throat between shots.
When Henry is eating the chicken at the banquet, the size of the bird and the amount of meat left to be consumed change from shot to shot. For example, Henry tears off the second chicken leg and thigh and begins to eat it, but then during a closeup, the second chicken leg is still attached to the bird.
When Henry and Katherine Howard are sitting together in front of the fire in the banqueting hall, his arms are resting on the chair arms; in the next shot, his hands are now clasped in front of him, and Katherine's hands have moved position on the ends of her armchair.

Factual errors

Whilst accurately showing Anne Boleyn's execution by a specially requested swordsman from France, rather than an ax, the film shows the fixing of a block to the scaffold. A block is not used in decapitations by sword.

Anachronisms

Anne of Cleves compares Henry to the legend of Bluebeard, a literary work not known to exist before 1697.
Henry sends the court into gales of laughter when he describes marriage as "the triumph of hope over experience", a witticism attributed to the 18th century writer and lexicographer Samuel Johnson.
