Goofs

Gold Diggers of 1933

Edit

Continuity

During the violin sequence, the cord for the lights on the violin disappears and reappears throughout.
(at around 1h 18 min) Lawrence (Warren William) is on his bed with an ice pack, Peabody (Guy Kibbee) sitting next to him. Lawrence gets up and undoes the sash of his robe, but in the next shot, the sash is completely tied.
When Brad's brother walks out of the University Club, there is a member on a chair smoking with one hand and reading a newspaper with the other. On the following shot, after another member walks out, the person on the chair is now holding the newspaper with both hands and not smoking.
When Trixie tells Fays about the exit sign, she has her left arm down by her side. On the next cut when it goes to a two-shot, her left arm is now up and bent at the elbow.
(at around 1h 20 mins) The buckle of Fay Fortune's dress changes sides.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

When Peabody informs Brad and Polly that he and Trixie are married, Brad, in turn, informs Peabody that he and Polly are married. Peabody acts astonished and offers his congratulations. However, previously, Peabody read the newspaper headline announcing Brad and Polly's wedding; therefore, this scene is confusing and not logical since Peabody already knew that they were married. However, this is part of the little prank that Lawrence and Peabody are playing on the girls after learning they were pranked. Peabody had to act surprised to play the part.
When J. Lawrence is talking to Carol about Polly and Brad's marriage, he threatens that if they are married, he will have the marriage annulled. However, him not knowing of their marriage makes no sense, because in the previous scene, Peabody showed him a front-page article announcing their marriage. In addition, this is how he became aware that Carol was pretending to be Polly. However, this is part of the little prank that Lawrence and Peabody are playing on the girls after learning they were pranked. He didn't actually want to annul the marriage.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

When Brad plays piano for Mr. Hopkins, his fingers don't match the sound of the piano.

Character error

When the delivery man brings the expensive hat to Trixie, he says the cost is $75, and the price is repeated by Trixie. All this is said loudly in front of J. Lawrence Bradford, and he reacts to it. However, in the next shot when Bradford offers to pay for it, he asks for the cost of the hat and then is shocked by the price. There is no way he could not have heard the previous two times when the cost of the hat was mentioned.
