Hollywood Runaround was not too bad of a comedy short
tavm16 February 2019
Just watched this-the final short on the "American Slapstick 2" DVD set. This was an early talkie starring Monty Collins running for the mayor of Hollywood. Trouble is, gangsters want him dead! Some funny moments when Collins' girlfriend takes him to her all-women apartment. It's not as funny when the gangsters are persuing him but of the three talkie shorts on the "AS2" DVD set, this was the only funny of them. So on that note, I say give Hollywood Runaround a look.

Not a highpoint in the history of comedy!

The American Slapstick Volume 2 is a nice set of lesser known comedies. Oddly, in addition to many great slapstick era films, there are three sound comedies that all have the common thread of not being particularly funny. Instead of physical humor, the three films are much more vocal in style--and why they would put these in a slapstick collection is beyond me!

This particular film stars Monty Collins as a guy who is convinced to run for the mayor of Hollywood. The problem is that a local gangster has vowed to bump off anyone running against him. In some mildly funny moments, the gangsters bungle many accidents intended to get rid of Collins. Ultimately, the just kidnap him and threaten to blow him up (though a bullet in the head would have been a lot easier!). A Rin Tin Tin type dog manages to come to the rescue and Monty wins the election--though because the film is so unexciting, no one particularly cared!

Slow, not especially funny and amateurish--not exactly a highpoint in the history of comedy!
