- In French Indochina, a magistrate is assigned to investigate the murder of his boss. Unknown to him, the boss had a policy of requiring the wives of his subordinates to sleep with him if they wanted their husbands to get promoted. - Summary taken from a contemporary review printed May 26, 1929 in The Film Daily: The Gromaires -- Billie Dove and Antonio Moreno -- leave Paris for Cochin-China, where the latter seeks a career on the bench. Noah Beery the French resident, however, makes his promotions in ratio to the favors his subordinates' wives bestow. Moreno, aroused by this injustice and with four years of hard service to his record, decides to go to the governor to expose the resident. Beery learns of it. The wife, ready to sacrifice her honor to save the husband goes to the resident. He is later found murdered. Circumstances point to the wife, but a native thief is finally caught and so it ends with promotion in sight for Moreno.
