Pauline Starke in The Viking (1928)

Goofs

The Viking

Edit

Factual errors

Viking women neither shaved their underarms nor wore the strapless bustiers.
The Vikings did not wear horned helmets as shown in the film.
Helga's name would be "Helga Nilsdatter", not "Helga Nilsson".
The Newport Tower, also known as the Old Stone Mill, is a round stone tower located in Touro Park in Newport, Rhode Island, the remains of a windmill built in the mid-17th century. It has received attention due to speculation that it is actually several centuries older and, thus, would represent evidence of pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. Carbon dating shows this belief to be incorrect.

Anachronisms

Helga finds her slave (the captured English noble Lord Alwin) reading a book that is clearly a typeset, printed volume - 450 years before Gutenberg invents the printing press.
In King Olaf's tireless "efforts to spread the new Faith", a subject is shown kissing the cross of a rosary that a priest is holding. The film is set around the end of the first Millennium (Leif Ericsson was born in the 970s CE.), whereas the rosary did not appear until 1221 CE.
When playing dice, Egil is successful. One of the spectators s opines, ... "Lucky at dice, unlucky at love." This phrase is a derivative of "Lucky at cards, unlucky at love", which dates from only from the mid-1800s.
