Officially listed as a "lost film" by The American Film Institute in 1971, here's "Perils of the Rail", a little the worse for wear but seemingly whole and complete, on a good Alpha DVD. Just as well, because although it's her second last of no less than 140 titles, it's also one of Miss Holmes' best movies. Admittedly, the plot is a very familiar one but it's not only quite believable but it leads into lots and lots of great railroad action with near misses by real trains on real private railroads. The plot is well acted, particularly by Miss Holmes who seems to do her own stunts. I couldn't spot any doubles, but admittedly the movie is directed at a breathless pace by her husband, J.P. McGowan. I couldn't spot McGowan in the cast this time around, but Lloyd Whitlock plays the villain with his usual flourish, while Ed Hearn turns in a great job as the likable, victimized hero.
