Too Much Chasing
Mike-76428 December 2007
Jim Turner has discovered a rich gold mine that he plans to use its profits to take care of his two granddaughters Jennie and Skeets. Horse Williams who has his eyes on Jennie also has his eyes on Turner's riches and shoots the old timer. Jess Dean, a local cowhand, is framed for the murder by Williams, since he was carrying a sample of the gold (which Turner wanted Dean to give to Jennie). Williams convinces the town of Dean's guilt and he escapes, but Williams organizes his "posse" to go after Dean. The movie lacks originality even for one made in 1924 since the plot I described takes place in the first 12-15 minutes then the next 35 is just Williams' gang chasing after Dean. The film also doesn't have much in the way of great horse-riding stunts characteristic of Yakina Canutt, but the climax of the film with Yak fighting Williams does provide plenty of action and thrills. Rating 5.

Yak and Jim ultimately outwit claim stealers!

Warning: Spoilers
I've always wanted to see some of Yak's work in the twenties and good old Alpha have fulfilled this wish with a double feature tribute, namely reasonably good copies of "Branded a Bandit" (1924) and "Bad Men's Money" (1929).

Before we go exploring though, I's like to correct the many present-day reviewers who get Yak's name wrong when they are talking about him on TV or even just among themselves. They usually get "Yakima" right. He was simply called "Yak" among his friends. His surname, however, is pronounced "Canoot". It rhymes with "boot", not "ute" as many reviewers incorrectly say.

Anyway, I thought "Branded a Bandit" was the better of the two movies. In fact I so enjoyed it's clever plot and first-rate acting that I watched it twice. The story is well written and the plot has a very clever yet very simple twist that certainly surprised me! This one was very ably directed by Paul Hurst who made really good use of his real locations.
