- Eve Allinson, a former country girl who came to New York for a stage career, is now a star. She is backed by wealthy Brutus Tawney, owner of the hotel Vandermeer. Mrs. Clara Knittson has taken Eve under her wing, and the two live in luxury at the hotel. Tawney throws a party for Eve after her performance. After the party, one of the guests implies that Eve is Tawney's mistress.
Eve suspects that perhaps she is not as talented as she thought. The next morning, Eve dons simple clothes, and while seated in a restaurant, reads an ad for a leading lady in a dramatic company. The salary is $15.00 weekly, with all expenses paid. Eve takes on the name Merridy Lee, and is engaged by Orlando Jolley, owner of the Orlando Jolley Floating Theatre, named "The Thespis." The Thespis docks at Brookins Landing. There, Page Brookins, a young farmer, supports his mother. When a handbill from the Jolley troupe reaches him, his mother urges him to attend the show. He goes, and falls for Eve.
Page writes to Howe Snedecor in New York, telling him about Eve's beauty and talent, and asks him to get a New York manager interested. He encloses a photo of Eve in the letter. Snedecor takes the photo to Maurice Gibbon, who works for Tawney. Gibbon is glad that Eve has been found, and informs Tawney. Gibbon, along with Page, goes to see Eve perform. When Eve sees the two in the audience, she is startled, but manages to complete her song. Page, still not knowing Eve's real identity, enters her dressing room and informs her that Eve Allinson's manager wants to see her. Eve and Page visit Gibbon at his hotel, and Gibbon offers her $200 per week. Page thinks this is an incredible amount of money, and can't understand why Eve refuses the offer. Gibbon sees Eve in private and informs her he will send her to jail if she does not fulfill her contract. Eve appeals to Gibbon, and he realizes that she really loves Page. Gibbon goes back to New York without her, and Eve and Page agree to get married. Gibbon reports back to Tawney, telling his boss he will not to back for Eve. Tawney goes to the newspapers and tells them the story of the discovery of Eve Allinson. Page reads the story and sees Eve's photography. At the same time, he receives a letter from Snedecor, who suggests there is a relationship between Eve and Tawney. Page thinks Eve has been lying to him, and leaves her.
But his mother convinces him he is mistaken. Tawney arrives in his yacht, along with Mrs. Knittson. Mrs. Knittson calls on Eve, and convinces her to board the yacht. Page gets into a skiff, overcomes the yacht, and boards it. He confronts Tawney, and Eve rushes to Page. Tawney realizes he is through, and mutters "youth goes to youth." That evening, Eve turns down an offer of $1000 a week from Gibbon.
