- Sir Archibald Falkland is the British ambassador to Turkey. He lives near Constantinople with his wife, the Lady Falkland, and their son. But Lady Falkland is mistreated by her husband, and he also mistreats their son. He maintains his mistress, Lady Edith, in quarters adjoining his wife's room, and also gives her power over his wife. One night, during a storm, Lady Falkland is surprised by a Russian prince, who is a guest of her husband's. The man attacks her, and Falkland discovers them together. He forces his wife to sign a paper confessing to her infidelity even though she is not guilty. Lady Falkland summons her old American sweetheart, Captain Richard Loring, when she learns she may lose her son. In a dream sequence, Lady Falkland and Loring appear as a princess and knight, whose romance is interrupted by a prince (Falkland) from a neighboring kingdom who buys the princess. In real life, Loring confronts Falkland over Lady Falkland's alleged discretion. The two fight, and Falkland is killed. Long escapes, and is aided by the Turkish police chief, who owes Long a favor. The police chief pins the killing on a murderer who has escaped from jail. Thus, Loring and Lady Falkland are united.—scsu1975
