Ethel Clayton Is Missing in Action
wes-connors12 December 2010
Based on the 1917 novel "Green Fancy" by George Barr McCutcheon, this wartime adventure film was a vehicle for pretty, popular Ethel Clayton, ranked as favorite star #20 by "Motion Picture Magazine" in 1918. She was also liked by their film critic, Hazel Simpson Naylor; although her February, 1919 column complained, "Why WILL Paramount cast that fine actress, Ethel Clayton, in wild melodrama? She suffered thru the same kind of plots at World. We hoped for different things when she signed her new contractÂ… 'The Mystery Girl' is entertaining, dealing as it does with a countess in war work, spies, murders and love, but Miss Clayton's unusual talents seem rather wasted." The film is unavailable, but the novel upon which it is based can be readily found online.
