- Financier Mark Harrold is responsible for the financial ruin and subsequent suicide of Stanton. Following his death, Stanton's daughter Margaret, seeking revenge, goes to work for Harrold's beloved daughter Helen. The latter plans to marry the dashing Lord Strathmore and thus attain her social ambitions, but Margaret, to avenge her father's death, wins Strathmore away from her by deception. After their marriage, Margaret leaves Strathmore, claiming that she never loved him. With the birth of their child, Margaret becomes ill and blind, but Strathmore finds her and gives her money under an assumed identity. Following an operation that restores her sight, Margaret recognizes her husband as her benefactor and realizes that she loves him.
- Margaret, daughter of Stanton, who was ruined by Harold, determines to revenge her father's memory. She decides to strike at his enemy through the man's daughter, in whom his happiness is tied up. Lord Strathmore is engaged to the daughter, Helen, and Margaret realizes that the greatest blow that she can strike the family is to win him away from her, thus depriving her of the title and position she craves, and humiliating her before society. She gradually wins Strathmore's attention, and one day, while wandering in the mountains with him, contrives to lose the path, so they are forced to spend the night alone. Strathmore, rather than have her compromised, offers to marry her the next morning, and she accepts gladly. Later, however, she tells him she does not love him, and leaves him, fleeing to the south. After her child is born she is stricken by an illness which leaves her blind. Strathmore, after a weary search, On account of finds her and seeing her state, does not disclose his identity. On account of her blindness his deception is made possible and he helps her financially by pretending to be an old friend of her father's. An operation restores her sight, and she sees benefactor is the man she deceived. A reconciliation takes place, and the two start their wedded life again on a basis of love and trust.—Moving Picture World synopsis
