When she loses the job, she decides to impersonate one of the nurses to take a job at the home of wealthy invalid Harvey Gorman. While Roberts begins poisoning Gorman with arsenic, Mina is instructed to seduce Cal into proposing to her, a plan that fails only because the jealous daughters of the ranch's housekeeper expose Mina's charade. Dr. Prine, Gorman's doctor, has fallen in love with Mina and, after hearing the story of her miserable childhood, forgives her impersonation.—Pamela Short
- Mina Rogers, an orphan girl, is engaged as housemaid by a party of professional nurses. After a week's employment Mina is told that her services will be no longer required. The day she is to leave the telephone rings and Mina makes an appointment for one of the nurses, Grace Kelcy, to undertake the care of Harvey Gorman, a wealthy invalid. Taking a desperate chance Mina presents herself at Gorman's, impersonating "Miss Kelcy," and begins her duties. Roberts, a villain, is retained as Gorman's male nurse. Dr. Prine takes a marked fancy to Mina and observes how carefully she nurses his patient. Roberts discovers that Mina is not a trained nurse, confronts her with her deception, and thus obtains a hold upon her by promising to remain silent. Mina repulses the advances Roberts makes. Jane, a household servant in love with Roberts, senses an intimacy between Roberts and Mina and turns to its worst possible construction, an incident Roberts created in his endeavors to enmesh Mina in his villainous plans. Gorman's wealth includes an immense ranch in the west, and when Roberts is called to witness Gorman's will he discovers that this valuable property is bequeathed to Cal Morgan, the foreman of the ranch. Following Mina to her room Roberts demands that she immediately go west, impersonate a girl sent by Gorman to recover her health, marry Morgan before he learns of his inheritance and divide the spoils with Roberts. Meanwhile Roberts is to use his position as Gorman's nurse to feed his patient poison in small potions, and ultimately end Gorman's life. Jane bursts into the room, accuses Mina of immoral practices with Roberts, calls the household servants to witness Mina's disgrace and forces the nurse to give up her position. Mina then decides to co-operate with Roberts and leaves for the west, following a telegram Roberts has sent to Morgan, with Gorman's signature attached to instructions that open the hospitality of the ranch to Mina for an indefinite time. Dr. Prine and his patient Gorman are both mystified at Mina's sudden and unexplained departure, and it is not until Roberts relates the household scandal that Prine believes ill of the girl. Gorman's increasing weakness prompts Dr. Prine to call another physician into consultation. The presence of arsenic in a stimulant that is being given Gorman is thus discovered and Roberts overhearing the discussion between the two physicians, realizes that his crime is about to be discovered. After sending a message to Mina, followed by a letter, explaining that their plans have been frustrated, Roberts disappears. Meanwhile Mina, established on the ranch, has attracted the sincere love of Morgan and thereby gained the enmity of Morgan's housekeeper and her two marriageable daughters. The three women connive by secretly searching Mina's effects to discover that she has been a nurse, and when the communications come from Roberts advising Mina to "make her get-away" the plotting females open them and confront Mina with evidence of her craftiness. Morgan still believes in Mina and is in a fair way to urge marriage upon the girl when Dr. Prine arrives at the ranch to investigate the confusing and suspicious circumstances that point to Mina. The girl unburdens her heart to Morgan and Dr. Prine and in the end finds happiness as the doctor's wife.—Moving Picture World synopsis
