- Episode 1: "The Vengeance of Legar" The story begins years ago on an island in the South. Enoch Golden, a wealthy planter, catches Jules Legar, a scheming physician, making love to his wife in an attempt to learn the secret hiding place of Golden's wealth. Suspecting the worst, Golden sends his wife away, and as punishment to Legar has his handsome face branded with white-hot irons and his hand crushed in a vise. Then Legar, set free, swears vengeance and begins his villainy by opening the sluice-gates that keep the sea from inundating the island. The waters rush in and the entire island is flooded and its houses swept away in the swirling waters. Legar kidnaps Golden's daughter, Margery, whom, in the next scene, twenty years later, we see grown to beautiful maidenhood, in his ominous power. Hate still lives in Legar's heart, and he sends Margery to a denizen of the underworld in whose house she is to be detained. But here steps in a mysterious gallant known as "The Laughing Mask," who saves her, for the nonce, from her fate.—Moving Picture World synopsis
- Episode 2: "The House of Unhappiness" After being rescued by that mysterious avenger of wrongs, known to the underworld as "The Laughing Mask," and returned to her father, from whom she was kidnapped when a child, Margery is again threatened by the sinister master criminal Legar, alias "The Iron Claw." Legar's purpose is to wreak vengeance on Enoch Golden, the girl's father, who, years before, finding Legar, then his friend, unfaithful, had the latter's face seared with white hot irons and his hand crushed in a vise. To intimate Golden into returning his daughter to his (Leger's) clutches, the master criminal, with the help of Stein's Electric Ray Projector, a deadly instrument, sets fire to many of Golden's properties and threatens further mischief should his demands not he acceded to. Margery, the daughter, seeing that she is the cause of great misfortune to her father, voluntarily returns to "The Iron Claw." But, by the looks of things, Legar won't have such easy sailing, for Davy Manly, Golden's secretary, has her interests at heart, and that other mysterious agent, "The Laughing Mask," promises to give further account of himself in the next chapter, called "The Cognac Cask."—Moving Picture World synopsis
- Episode 3: "The Cognac Cask" Legar sets fire to Golden's tenements with the aid of Stein's Electro-Ray Projector. The instrument is locate by Manly, and Stein and two of Legar's henchmen are captured. Margery, hoping to save her father's property, returns to Legar. Manly then surprises a veiled woman watching the house, and later she proves to be Mrs. Golden, waiting an opportunity to speak to her husband regarding Margery's fate. Golden orders her from the house, but Manly runs after her and supplies her with money. Later, the Laughing Mask smuggles the girl from Legar's den in a cognac cask. Legar follows in an automobile, but the machine dashes through an open drawbridge, killing all but Legar. Margery suspects that the Laughing Mask is a woman.—Moving Picture World synopsis
- Episode 4: "The Name and the Game" Golden and Manly saw Mrs. Golden intent on watching the house and the former ordered her away. Manly supplied her with money and promised to aid her. The Laughing Mask smuggled Margery from Legar's den and the pursuing criminals ran their automobile over an open bridge. Legar robbed a bank at which some of Golden's money was kept, and successfully fastened the blame on the Laughing Mask. The man of mystery, disguised as one of Legar's henchmen, got control of the loot and notified Golden of his intention to return it only after Golden had improved conditions in his tenements.—Moving Picture World synopsis
- Episode 5: "The Incorrigible Captive" Margery, accompanied by Manly on a shopping tour, saw a parrot that once belonged to Legar and purchased it. The parrot escaped and returned to Legar's den. Manly was kidnapped and brought to the den and with the aid of the parrot, made his escape. Margery looking for certain documents to be forwarded to her father, was set upon by the master criminal, who stole a valuable map and then locked her in the vault. Margery was released from the vault, although not until the talkative parrot repeated the combination to her rescuers. Outside the house the Laughing Mask wrests the map from the fleeing criminal and returns it to Margery.—Moving Picture World synopsis
