Indians attack the caravan and kill the immigrants. The girl who in a spirit of fun has run ahead into the fields, escapes and makes her way to a clearing where she is found by two brothers, settlers in the wild country. They take her into their cabin and adopt her. Both fall in love with her and each fancies himself favored. The elder misunderstands her affection toward him and is shocked when, returning unexpectedly to the cabin, he finds her in his brother's arms. Consumed with rage, he is about to fire at them through the window when he sees that the girl is wearing a scarf which he recognizes. It is one of two worked by the hands of his mother, now dead, who had sent them as her last gift to the boys far away. At sight of the scarf memory floods his heart, and he lets fall the weapon. Entering the cabin, he gives the pair his blessing, then turns away and makes for another place, fearing lest he lose self control in the presence of the girl he will always love.
