- Tex Sherwood has just come into possession of a valuable piece of land that will be irrigated by a new dam. Banker Holman knowing the deed must be registered the next day, offers a $50,000 reward for Tex's capture.

- Jack-of-all-trades Luke Hawkins, of the western town of Lariat, falls in love with Mary Darling, the leading lady in a traveling theatrical troupe (of the old-fashioned "mortgage melodrama" variety). He follows her to New York, takes another series of jobs, and finally works as an extra in Mary's new production. Just as the play is about to flop, Luke recognizes Mary, and his rush to take her in his arms turns the show into a hit.

- Jack Melford, the prize hurdler at a small college, wins a big race and learns immediately afterward that his father is near death. He returns home to find his father dead and himself penniless, his father having left everything to Dr. Dehli, the foreign specialist who treated him. Jack later discovers that the same Dr. Dehli is caring for Julia Cunningham, the aunt of his orphaned sweetheart, Rae Davis. Jack eventually exposes the doctor as a charlatan, revealing Dehli's plans to hypnotize Rae's aunt and force her to disinherit the girl. Jack also rounds up the crooks who worked with Dehli, winning for himself the love of Rae and the gratitude of her aunt.
- John Briggs, an Englishman employed as a chauffeur to a member of the Russian nobility, is forced to escape Russia during the Bolshevik revolution. He comes across the dead body of a Russian officer identified as Alexis Triona and finds a diary on the body that details his exciting adventures among the Bolsheviks. Upon his return to England, Briggs continues to work as a chauffeur while trying to become a writer, but his manuscripts are met with rejections from every publisher. He decides to use some of the stories he found in Triona's diary. This time publishers are much more receptive, and "his" stories become best-sellers. To keep up the charade, he passes himself off as the real Triona. Complications ensue.

Cora loves Dick Sterling, but her stepmother tricks Cora into agreeing to marry her son in order to make it easier to steal the ranch from her Dick learns of the scheme and determines to foil the dastardly plot and win the girl he loves.
- Hardhearted Kate Comstock has always resented her daughter Elnora because her husband Robert died in the quicksands of the Limberlost swamp when Elnora was born. Longing for her mother's love, beautiful Elnora is easily loved by everyone else, including neighbors Wesley and Margaret Sinton and the "Bird-Woman" of the swamp, who helps Elnora raise money by teaching her to capture moths and butterflies for sale. Elnora does well in high school, too, and when Philip Amon comes to the neighborhood to recover his health, they fall in love with each other. Unfortunately, Philip is engaged to Edith Carr, a high-spirited but jealous beauty. Elnora seeks to avoid conflict with Edith by staying with Freckles and his wife, who also live in the Limberlost, but when Elnora helps nurse Philip back to health, Edith leaves them free to marry. When Mrs. Comstock learns that her husband had been unfaithful to her with neighbor Elvira Carney, she finally discovers in herself a love for her daughter, and extends her affections enough to adopt the orphaned boy Billy and his dog.
- Clorinda Wildairs breaks off an affair with the unscrupulous Sir John Ozen to become engaged to a rich nobleman, Mertoun, the Duke of Osmonde. Clorinda accidentally kills Sir John when he, infuriated by her forthcoming marriage, threatens to blackmail her. She buries the body in the cellar and admits her act to the forgiving Osmonde before marrying him.

- Paul Bonard an artist, loses his memory when he receives a blow on the head from one of two apaches fighting over Wildcat, a sultry stepper in a cafe. He becomes an apache himself, falls in love with Wildcat and paints her portrait--his masterpiece. Wildcat learns Paul's identity and restores him to his family, though realizing that she will lose him. Surgery restores Paul's memory, but some subconscious force guides him back to the cafe and Wildcat's love.

They soon discover that Cyrus actually isn't who he appears to be and that something shady is going on at the resort.

Later, she and Farr meet; she plots a revenge against the lawyer but confesses her fabrication when she realizes that she loves him.

He enters the apartment looking for the "letters", but is caught by the tenant, who calls the police. Billy discovers that the "letters" were actually very valuable bonds. Not wanting Eva to get in trouble, Billy tells the police that he and the girl are actually married, but then Eva's relatives show up. Complications ensue.

At the same time, a young American man is informed that he will come into a large sum of money if he reaches a certain bank by a given date.
