When Cas's best friend, Kendall, is offered a position with the Wolfpac, Windfall's military cult that acts as the city's police, Cas is forced to decide where his loyalties lie. Meanwhile, something sinister looms over the city itself, threatening the lives of all who live in Windfall, from the wealthiest residents to the ground-level poor.

When Grace does not follow, Anna boards the train to New York, confident that her sister is in another car. Thus they are separated, for Grace, meanwhile, has been run down by an auto and lies unconscious in a hospital. Anna is frantic over her sister's absence and suspects that she has gone to Phillip for aid. Not daring to reveal her whereabouts, she secures a room and looks for work. Grace leaves the hospital and goes to New York. She rents a room next door to Anna's lodging place. Undreamed by either, the sisters are living on opposite sides of the airshaft. The creditors take possession of the old home and propose an auction. Phillip prevails upon them to wait, feeling that he must and will trace the girls. He takes charge of mail for Anna and his search brings him to New York. Anna, discouraged and exhausted, is eating her frugal dinner. Across the way Grace is heating water on an alcohol stove. It overturns and soon the room is in flames, with Grace panic-stricken. Anna knows that someone needs help. Snatching several bed slats, she swings them across the shaft, crosses the narrow sagging bridge and plunges into the room to find Grace unconscious. The fire has been discovered and the first passer-by is urged to give the alarm. The man is Phillip. Anna carries her sister across to safety just as the firemen and Phillip burst in. There is recognition all around. Phillip gives Anna the undelivered letter. She learns that through an error in cabling the legacy is not $500, but $5,000. The debts are paid in full and Anna admits that now nothing stands between Phillip and herself.

The misunderstandings start when the $5,000 check is destroyed and the sisters, who have never met Juan Hernando, try to find him so that he can write them another check. Sister Bertrille finds a Juan Hernando, who she thinks is the Juan Hernando for who she is is searching. This Juan Hernando - Honest Juan Hernando as he calls himself - is in fact not, but a crooked politician. When Sister Bertrille mentions the $5,000 donation, he misunderstands and thinks the sisters are donating to his mayoralty campaign. The next misunderstanding happens when Honest Juan Hernando tells his constituents that he is being supported by the sisters, after which the bishop reads about their support and thinks the sisters are indeed mixing religion and politics, but worse yet supporting a crook. Honest Juan Hernando finally figures out that the sisters have him confused with someone else, but fails to clear up the confusion as he figures their support will get him elected, when he can use public funds to do whatever he wants include donating $5,000 to the convent. The Reverend Mother perpetrates the next misunderstanding when the real Juan Hernando shows up at the convent, and she ultimately thinks that he is the crooked politician who was using the donation to bribe the convent for its political support. So she refuses to take his replacement check/donation. Before it's too late, all the misunderstandings are cleared up. However, the real Juan Hernando won't donate the $5,000 anymore since he agrees with the Reverend Mother that his wealth was primarily gained by dubious means. But he does ends up donating the proceeds from one legitimate business transaction, the proceeds being $100. It's better than a kick in the pants, but not by much. As for Honest Juan Hernando, the sisters make him repent for perpetrating the falsehood that he was the philanthropic Juan Hernando - they make him tell his constituents the political truth.

When Uncle Joe learns that the money was probably stolen from the Crabwell Corners Bank, he tries to return what's left of it to the bank without appearing to be involved in the robbery.
