- Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the second-costliest hurricane in United States history. It's been nine months since Sandy and her six foot waves swamped New York, changing lives forever. In the coastal town of Rockaway Beach in Queens, a group of surfers banded together and made it their mission to heal the community. In addition, The Graybeards, a local nonprofit organization that came together in the wake of 9/11, has raised and distributed more than $1 million to hurricane victims This is a story on the effects of Hurricane Sandy on Rockaway Beach in New York City and the efforts of the surfing community there to rebuild their homes and livelihood. Done in conjunction with a long-form story in the July issue of the Red Bulletin.
