As the jailer walks away, Jim goes to the door and looks after him, then stoops down, takes a file from his shoe, jumps on his cot and files a bar at the window. Two of the bars are finally loosened. Jim ties the bedclothes together, fastens the end to the unbroken bar and climbs out. Christmas Eve. At the judge's home the nurse brings his four-year-old daughter, a cripple, into the room. The father enters, undresses the child, arranges her stockings in the fireplace, sits beside her until she falls asleep and then goes out. Judge Ford, returning from Christmas shopping, enters his library loaded down with packages. He unpacks different ones, displaying toys and also a Santa Claus suit. He puts on the suit with a great deal of amusement, sits down to read and is soon fast asleep. Presently Jim comes to the window, peeps cautiously in, then softly enters. The Judge awakens, silently reaches for the revolver in his desk and before Jim realizes it, he is covered. The judge goes to the telephone, keeping his revolver pointed at Jim all the time. Realizing that he is calling for help, Jim falls to his knees and begs for mercy, which the judge scornfully and sternly refuses. He turns his head for an instant, Jim sees his chance, knocks the revolver out of his hand and chokes him into insensibility. Jim quickly binds the limp form, then starts in alarm as he hears a sound from upstairs. The little child awakes, crawls out of bed, limps to the fireplace, looks around, trying to discover where the sound comes from. She locates it from the room below, limps eagerly down, opens the door and enters. Meantime in the library Jim is impatiently waiting, holding the revolver for instant use. He glances about the room, observing the Santa Claus suit and quickly dons it. The little girl entering, thinks that Santa Claus is before her, limps over to him with delight. Jim is uncomfortable and as the child holds up her mouth for a kiss, his better nature asserts itself. The little girl has found the soft spot in Jim's hard heart. The little innocent thanks him for the many good things, then as she falls asleep in his arms, Jim carefully covers her, looks at the child reverently and lifts his eyes to heaven in supplication. The judge recovers consciousness, sees this act of kindness, takes Jim's hand in token of sincere friendship.
- Among the students of a large university are George Austin and Frank Graves. Austin is wealthy, whereas Graves has to work nights in a café to pay his tuition. One night Graves reproves a number of boisterous students in the café for their actions, and they attack him outside. Austin comes to his assistance, and a bond of friendship is formed between the two men. Austin falls desperately in love with Edythe Martin, the university flirt, and becomes engaged to her. When he finds her flirting in the café, he works himself into a frenzy, and Edythe scornfully leaves him. Austin goes home with Graves, and in his rage, denounces the Almighty and the world in general. Graves, who is very pious, begs Austin not to speak so, and the result is a breach in the friendship. Austin soon develops into a pronounced atheist. In the middle of the term Austin receives word that his father is dead, and he leaves college. Life in New York bores him after a while, and when the opportunity comes for him to visit a western ranch, which is part of his father's estate, he welcomes it. The western life appeals to him, and he gradually forgets the past after he meets Nellie, a charming girl. He falls in love with her, and one day she accepts him, not knowing of his scorn for religion. Only when Austin tells Nellie she will have to give up her religion does she realize the type of man she is going to marry, and then she gives him his ring. Austin gives vent to his rage again, and leaves Nellie broken-hearted. Back east, Graves follows his religious inclinations by entering the priesthood. The years pass. Nellie has become a nurse, and Austin has often regretted his action. He visits the east on business and meets with a serious accident. When he recovers consciousness, it is to find Nellie bending over him. He stretches out his arms to her and then remembers his unworthiness. Nellie impresses upon him the work of God in bringing them together again, and Austin finally sees the light. He asks for a priest, and Graves is summoned. There is a pathetic reunion of the old friends. Austin recovers, and asks Nellie if she can forget the past. She tells him she has prayed for this moment during all the years. And the repentant man folds her in his arms. A year later he no longer scoffs at the Bible, but plans with Nellie a great future for their infant son.
