The Crafts see in Marcia a tractable pupil and destroying the letter adopt Marcia. The girl grows up steeped in vice and is used as an assistant in the robbing of the home of a minister. Sarah Craft feigns illness and while the minister is giving her attention and some money Marcia picks his pocket. She is caught red-handed, and after the minister severely flayed the maker of thieves, Marcia consents to remain in his household and be reformed. With him she does mission work. Marcia, overhearing a remark of the minister's sister to the effect that when one is a thief he is always a thief, leaves the house and returns to her erstwhile haunts. She is welcomed by the Crafts who immediately plan another robbery with Marcia as the central figure. She answers an advertisement and gets a place as a domestic in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Fletcher, Mary Bowers' parents. She has dropped the key of the house out of the window to her associates when she sees a portrait which she recognizes as that of her mother. The likeness in the locket corresponds with the large portrait. Marcia is overcome but the key has been dropped and it is too late. The Crafts are trapped when they enter, Marcia having told her grandparents, the Fletchers, of the contemplated burglary. The minister, a visitor at the Fletcher home, reclaims Marcia.

The probation officer sees Tom has the making of a good man in him, should he be placed in the proper environment, and when Mr. Barnes, a wealthy philanthropist, with Helen, as only daughter, expresses a wish to adopt a boy, the officer suggests he interview Tom. The lad makes a very favorable impression on Mr. Barnes, and the latter adopts him. Amidst the surroundings of refinement and wealth, the boy grows up to be a fine young man with an inspiration to become a lawyer. Ten years later, he becomes a very prominent and successful one. He falls in love with Helen, and she with him, but realizing his humble origin, Tom keeps silent. At a Christmas gathering, the girl is wooed by Bonner, a man of wealth and social position but she refuses his proposals of marriage. Tom determines to leave that night, sacrificing himself to gain, as he thinks, Helen's happiness. Just as he is leaving, he discovers that the house has caught fire from a carelessly thrown cigarette, and starting in the Christmas tree, is spreading rapidly. In the ensuing excitement and danger, Bonner proves himself a coward, while Tom. although badly burned, bravely rescues both father and daughter from the burning building, and receives his reward in the complete understanding and love of Helen and her father.
- After a Sioux uprising and massacre at New Ulm, Minnesota, brothers George and John Sontag form an outlaw band with Chris Evans, largely because of greed. They engineer several successful and spectacular train robberies before a sheriff's posse and Federal officials begin to trail them.
