Linton locates "Nurse Elizabeth," as she styled herself, and on the pretext of a real estate deal, meets Baron Wolnaugh in his home and is introduced to his wife, whom he recognizes as Sir Henry's former nurse. Margaret, realizing Linton's purpose writes him a note telling him to leave for the present, and that she will free herself for him if possible. Her letter is apprehended by her husband, whose rage overcomes him and causes a stroke of apoplexy. Margaret, seeing that her duty is henceforth at her husband's side, decides to nurse him, and informs Linton by note that her duty must needs part them forever. During a short absence of his nurse, the Baron makes the fatal error of taking an extra powder of a very potent drug and dies. Karl, happening on Margaret's note saying that she will free herself for Linton if possible, sees in it a good opportunity to connect her criminally with his father's death, and uses the note as evidence against her in court. He also induces a servant who saw the Baron take the powder to swear he saw Margaret give it. The servant confesses the truth under cross-examination, and admits it was Karl who intimidated him to bear false witness. Karl, in his rage shoots the servant. Margaret is freed, and in the Valley of Dreams, she and Richard find solace in the consummation of their tragic romance.

On descending, he finds that one explosion has already occurred. Taking his coat he places it over a mortally injured miner and is about to leave the gallery when another occurs. Marshall is rendered unconscious. The deadly gases and rising water drive the panic stricken miners out. The burned body of a man is brought to the surface. Harrison, finding Marshall's wallet in the dead man's coat, identities him as the engineer. Claudia, hearing the news is heartbroken. However, Marshall has had a miraculous escape. The hermit's cave communicated with the mine by deserted galleries. The old man, hearing the explosion, climbed through and dragged Marshall to his retreat, his face scarred and burned. Realizing his plight, Marshall believes that he must forget Claudia and hide from the world. In the meantime, Claudia still clings to the loving memory of Marshall, though she is menaced by Harrison, who wishes her to marry him. Months later Claudia visits the hermit's cave. The sight overcomes her and she faints, Marshall, observing, goes to her and places some forget me nots by her side and then creeps away. Time passes. Under the hermit's care his face begins to heal. Harrison during this period has become desperate and has decided to poison Claudia. The act of pouring poison into the girl's glass is observed by Marshall, who has come to leave flowers by his sweetheart's window. He rushes back to the cave and with the hermit confronts Harrison. Harrison is arrested and led away. Marshall tears away his mask. Claudia recognizes him. though his face is scarred, and still loving. She goes to his arms.

Volume 2 follows 3 individuals of different ages and backgrounds with neuropsychiatric disorders, and explores the relationship between culture, mental illness, and first-person experience. "The Bird Dancer" focuses on the social stigma of neuropsychiatric disorder and the human suffering it entails. "Family Victim" examines the bi-directional influences between an individual considered to have a disruptive or troublesome personality and his social world. "Kites and Monsters" follows a young Balinese from boyhood to manhood, discovering the influential and protective aspects of culture that may guide developmental neuropsychiatric processes.
