- Mabel Bannister, the daughter of Richard Bannister, visits the wealthy Cardews at Ripley Manor and falls in love with young Jack Cardew, the son of the Bishop of Ripley, Lord John Cardew. Jack asks Mabel to marry him and Jack's stepmother Lady Hester approves, but the bishop doesn't because he knows nothing about Mabel's family. The family invites Mabel and her parents to dinner at the manor to get acquainted--but it turns out that few people in both families are quite what they appear to be, and each side has secrets that they don't want the other to find out.
- Diane Summers' mother died giving birth to her, and Diane has been terrified of the same thing happening to her if she becomes pregnant. When her boyfriend Bruce Gordon proposes to her, she agrees to marry him on one condition--that the marriage never be consummated so that she will never have children. Gordon agrees, but soon finds the situation unbearable and leaves her. Diane, seeing how happy other women are with their children, finally changes her mind about not having children of her own, and sets out to find her husband and inform him. However, the train she's on is derailed and she is "rescued" by Phillip Darnton, who has his own plans for Diane--and they don't include bringing her back to her husband.

A German spy offers to buy his invention, but Arthur refuses, after which the spy tries to capture Arthur's sweetheart and then seduce him through the wiles of the Countess Von Shoenburg. When the spy finally resolves to destroy Arthur's workshop, Rover, the family dog, carries the bomb away and drops it by the tree behind which the agent is hiding. The spy is killed and the ground opens, revealing Arthur's long-lost family fortune.
