Even though she is determined to live alone after divorcing her drunken first husband, she also knows that her boy needs a male figure to correct his bad habits. She also needs a man badly. The love affair between Jacek and Irena begins however their first physical encounter shatters them both. Irena has a lot of problems: her son makes a lot of trouble at school, and at work her supervisor wants to take her route and give it to somebody else. Finally, the sick relative dies, and she is hit with the funeral bill instead with the expected inheritance. She steals pensioners' money she should be delivering. Tells Jacek that she indeed has received inheritance, places her son in a boaring institution and buys a used car for a trip to West Berlin, opting to immigrate. Now the accident happens...
- Story opens with Lucja Krol's husband under the tram. She gives birth to her fourth son on the floor of their new apartment. Neighbor Wiktor, a communist intellectual, befriends the poverty-stricken family but is soon arrested and sent to jail. During the war Lucja narrowly escapes a Nazi roundup at the black market. Her sons hold ardent Communist meetings in their apartment, with her blessing. Lucja works hard, but without complaint. After the war, Klemens is inexplicably arrested, accused by the new regime of being a collaborator. Wiktor, now a high-ranking party member, trying to defend him, himself falls into disgrace. Klemens is tortured to "confess" and dies in jail, a Communist to the end. Lucja is never told about his fate.

At this moment, he loses all the charm and the prince stops loving her... "The Ring and the Rose" - a film tale directed by Jerzy Gruza, based on the novel by William Thackeray of the same title.

Rejected because of her crooked teeth she takes a job of selling beer on a train and starts writing to Billy Wilder, trying to be casted in his next movie. At the trains station she meets a would-be cinematographer who is color blind. They become friends sharing their dreams of going to Hollywood. One day she finds a goldfish trapped in a beer bottle: she sets her free and makes three wishes, not for herself but for her friends. To her surprise all of them come true. As a reward she gets a long awaited call from Billy Wilder.
- Film traces the fascinating saga of princely Polish dynasty in years 1900-1935. In 1900 Prince Hans von Teuss entertains Emperor Wilhelm II with a bison hunt at his palatial residence. He finds out many years later that his wife was emperor's lover and divorces her. In the '20s, during the Silesian uprisings, Prince's son Konrad befriends foreman's son. In 1932, the Prince, now married to younger Marisca, becomes paralyzed and confined to wheelchair. His diabolical elder son takes over the ruined estate and unknown to his father becomes associated with Hitler's supporters.

- Follow up of the "Top Dog" (Wodzirej). Jerzy Stuhr reappears as Ludwik Danielak, smooth-talking hustler with a spreading waistline. He got sacked from his tv job in 1981 and now he is ready for comeback. His idea is the program called "Hero of the Year". His first star is to be Zbigniew Tataj (Mieczyslaw Franaszek), a quiet storekeeper, who saved an apartment building by alerting people about the gas leak. Danielak takes Tataj on a nationwide tour. It becomes clear, however, that he will not be allowed to speak frankly to the people but rather to read a prepared statement instead. Finally, at a hyped-up concert he walks off the stage, leaving Danielak in total surprise.
- Marcel is a Polish resistance fighter sentenced to death by communist authorities. When he escapes from prison, the only person he can stay at is Anna, his wartime lover.
