- The lonely wife of a newspaper editor falls in love with her visiting cousin-in-law, who shares her love for literature.
- Mr. Gupta passes away after an accident while on duty, leaving behind his ailing wife and school-going son, Ramnath. Both await for some compensation, and when they are informed that the company does not accept liability for Gupta's death, his wife falls down the stairs. and passes out. Now the story takes an interesting turn as Kumar turns blind with jealousy. Taking Ambar and Sunita to Fatehpur Sicri Kumar plays a cruel game and gets Sunita killed by her lover. Even more tragic incidents follow. Dying Sunita admits that she was pregnant with Kumar's son and Kumar kills Ambar by accident. In the end of this great saga we find that Kumar couldn't Bear this episode and affected with deep grief and guilt feeling he loses his mental sanity. Gangasaran is on the jury and would like Gopal to get a fair trial. The police find out that a woman was present with Gopal at the night of the murder, but Gopal refuses to divulge her name. As a result of this refusal, he is found guilty. When the sentence is about to be passed, Beena suddenly appears in Court and testifies that she was with Gopal the night of the murder. Gopal is set free, but Beena is shunned by Rajan and Gangasaran and not only driven out of the house, but also from the town. The question does remain - what compelled Beena to spend the night with Gopal, and why was Gopal accused of killing Ratanlal?

Baldev and Rekha move to their palatial house. The birth of a baby boy to Rekha does lighten things up a bit, but not for long. Dinanath loses his eyesight in an accident and becomes blind. Chandramohan goes out of town to look for employment, leaving his sick mother and blind father at the mercy of an uncaring daughter-in-law, and eventually the older couple are forced to leave Baldev's house. Chandramohan returns and is unable to locate them. What will be the fate of his parents in an unfriendly, cold, and heartless city?

Diwan agrees on a condition that Seema leaves Ashok alone. Seema goes on to commit suicide but is saved by a man. The suicide attempt makes her loose her memory. She starts working as nurse at Dr.Balraj's hospital. Ashok meets with a car accident and admitted to the hospital where his eyes were also operated. Uma goes to drop Munna to his grandfather and leave. But Diwan takes her as Ashok's wife and asks her to stay with him. She agrees for the sake of Munna. Dr.Balraj wants to marry Seema but she gains her memory back before the marriage takes place. Ashok has his operation successful. He finds Seema at Dr.Balraj's place. Diwan accepts Seema as his daughter in law.
- Prakash lives a wealthy lifestyle in Chandan Nagar along with his sister, Mala, and widowed mom. While traveling by train, Mala meets with an accident and is hospitalized. Also hospitalized are Kailash, Motilal, and a woman who has lost her memory after being molested by Kailash. Prakash and Mala decide to take this woman with them, they call her Jyoti, and after overcoming many objections from their pious Hindu mother, Prakash weds Jyoti, while Moti, who lives with his parsimonious father, Dhanpath Rai, weds Mala. Shortly thereafter Jyoti gives birth to Raju. On Raju's 3rd birthday, Jyoti goes to invite Mala and Dhanpath to his birthday party, but disappears from their lives. Prakash searches high and low, as well as lodges a missing persons' report with the Police - to no avail. Then a year later, while attending a wedding in Poona, Prakash comes across Jyoti, who now calls herself Bela, and is a dancing/singer courtesan. It looks like Jyoti has regained her memory, but is unable to recall her life with Prakash and even her son, Raju. When Prakash attempts to bring her home, he is faced with 3 hurdles, namely his very own mother, who will never permit a courtesan to enter her household; brothel madame Champabai, who refuses to let go of Bela; and Bela herself - who steadfastly refuses to accompany Prakash as his wife.
- Sharda (Mala Sinha) is the only daughter of a wealthy educationist and founder of Sharda College, Dubeyji (Nazir Hussain), where she studies. Dubeyji hires a young man as a Professor in this College. The young man's name is Vijay Kumar (Guru Dutt), who makes a good and lasting impression on Sharda and both fall in love. Vijay Kumar's mother (Leela Chitnis) and sister Uma (Lata Sinha) live in a small house in a far off village and are not wealthy. This affair between a professor and a student spreads like hot fire through the college campus and angers Dubeyji so much that he asks the College Principal, Vidya Ratan, to dismiss Vijay Kumar. But Vidya Ratan is supportive of Vijay Kumar and Sharda and convinces Dubeyji that it will be in everyone's best interest if both get married. Dubeyji reluctantly agrees and the two get married and return to Vijay Kumar's home. Once there, Vijay Kumar is approached by the Arts College Principal (David), who offers him a job at his college. Soon there is more good news when Vijay Kumar's sister Uma (Lata Sinha) gets married to her boyfriend Sukhiram (Deven Varma), son of the comically parsimonious Dukhiram (Om Prakash). One day during preparations for College Day festivities, Vijay falls off the roof of the college building and is hospitalized. The doctors are able to save his life, but warn the family that Vijay's heart has been weakened and being subjected to any stress can be fatal, including a sexual relationship with his wife. But the lure of the human flesh proves to be too much for Vijay and as soon as he recovers he wants to consummate his marriage with Sharda, who must either give in to the attraction of the flesh herself, or live the life of a celibate, or alternatively separate from Vijay and marry Shankar (Feroz Khan), the young man her father had wanted to marry in the first place.

Everyone is shocked, and the marriage is cancelled, leaving Mohan's family to wonder as to why he claims to be an untouchable person.
- Balraj (Dharmendra), affectionately called Raj, by his elder brother (Nana Palsikar) and sister Vija (Madhumati), is a student in college in the arts semester. As the family is not very rich, Raj decides to move from the hostel to the residence of a family. He finds one such family in Gandhinagar, which consists of Choudhury Hukumat Rai (Ashok Kumar), a lawyer by profession, his wife (Nimmi), and only daughter Shanti (Mala Sinha). Hukumat takes an instant liking to Raj, and tells him that his wife will only allow him to take up residence if he tells her that he is already married. Raj reluctantly does so, and thus acquires residence with the Rai family. Eventually Mrs. Rai takes a liking to Raj, so does Shanti. Shanti finds out Raj and her dad had lied to the family about Raj's marital status, she confronts Raj, and he readily admits that he lied. Both fall in love. Mr. and Mrs. Rai are thrilled, when they come to know that Raj and Shanti are in love, and excitedly plan their marriage. As Raj's brother is critically ill, Raj has to return to his village. After several days when Raj returns to the Rai family, he refuses to marry Shanti on the ground that he is going to marry Gauri (Sandhya Roy). The Rai family is devastated. And then they find out that then Raj has been arrested for killing someone.

- Dr. Shankar Chaudhry lives a wealthy lifestyle in Bombay with his widowed mom, Rukmini, and younger sister, Manju. His mom would like him to get married to Ambala-based Advocate Madhusudan's daughter, Maya, even though neither of them have seen her. Shankar does agree to this marriage; the marriage takes place, the bride faints after the formalities; she is looked after by her cousin, Prakash, and Madhusudan; she recovers, and the next day she accompanies Shankar to his home. On the very first night she informs him that since she is undergoing a Holy Fast, she must refrain from any sexual activity. A few days later, Prakash arrives to take her to Banaras where her dad has re-located. Shankar accompanies them and get re-married to her at Bhagwan Vishwanath's Temple. Thereafter, both get intimate and soon Maya becomes pregnant. One day Shankar comes home to find both Prakash and Maya missing. He searches for them, but is unable to locate them. It is then he finds out that the woman claiming to be his wife is not the daughter of Madhusudan, and may well have eloped with Prakash - who is not her brother. Watch as events unfold and the impact this discovery has on Shankar and the rest of his family.
- Chanda lives a wealthy lifestyle in Jaipur along with her father, Thakur Dharam Singh, and mom. Since she is of marriageable age, her dad wants her to get married to a wealthy male of his choice, but she dislikes him. Arguments ensue at home and her dad slaps her, she falls down and passes out. When she regains her senses she finds herself in a hospital in Bombay with her dad at her bedside, who tells her that she was unconscious for 3 days, apologizes and promises never to pressurize her to get married. She forgives him and they return home. A few days later she gets a visitor, a male Akashwani singer by the name of Raj Kumar, who claims to be her husband, calls her by the name of Rekha, and wants her to accompany him back to Bombay where he lives in a Chawl along with a two-bit Bollywood actor, Bansi. The question remains who is this male, and why is he claiming to be Chanda's husband?
- After his father is killed by a bandit by the name of Bharat of Chandravan, Naagsen is crowned King, and he rules his kingdom along with his wife, Rani Kundala, and sister, Rajkumari Chanda. Naagsen is not satiated with Kundala, and has an affair with Dancer, Kala, who he houses in a palace of her own. When the King of Kamroo, who is also a magician, abducts Chanda, she is rescued by a brave warrior, Deepu, who asks Naagsen for her hand in marriage. Naagsen is displeased and asks for the bloodline of Deepu, and when he finds out that Deepu is the son of Bharat, he has him arrested and placed in the dungeon. But Chanda helps him escape as both have fallen in love with each other. Naagsen hatches a scheme with Kala, and as a result, Deepu is lured back into the palace, arrested, and jailed. Deepu's friend, Mallu, a snake charmer, manages to free Deepu, only to have him re-captured, jailed, blinded, and he, along with Chanda, banished from the kingdom. A Princess with no livelihood skills, and a blind man are not likely to survive very long - especially with the odds stacked very high against them.

Ashok and Asha do like and eventually end up in love with each other, but Ashok's dad (Ulhas) does not approve to their marriage as he knows of Asha's parentage, a father who is an escaped convict, in jail for murder, and a mother whose profession was: prostition. Ashok himself sees Asha in her true colors when she sings and dances at a party, overly intoxicated.

His entire family is thrown out on the street, where they are taken care of by Vijay, a poor stage artist, who has fallen in love with Mala, who also has a place in her heart for him. But circumstances keep the two lovers apart, so much so that Mala is forced to refuse Vijay's help, re-locates further away from him, and joins a dance troupe. When Vijay finds out, he confronts her, and it is then Mala tells him that she is pregnant and going to have a child - a child that is definitely not of Vijay's - but of an unknown lover of Mala.

- Rekha lives a middle-class lifestyle with her widowed mom. When she is five, her mom's friend, Nalini, passes away, compelling 5 year old Lata and her maid, Rampyari, to move in with them. Rekha is friendly with Shankar, and is sad when his family re-locates to Kanpur. Years later Rekha has matured, Shankar has returned as a qualified doctor, and asks her mom for Rekha's hand in marriage, to which she agrees. Before the engagement could take place, Rampyari finds that Shankar is having an affair with Lata, compelling both of them to get married, leaving Rekha heart-broken. After the marriage, Lata moves out to live with Shankar, and Rekha's mom passes, leaving her a heavily mortgaged house and many debts. Rekha's re-pays the debts and moves out to live her family servant, Fohkat, his son, Makhan, and Makhan's wife, Misri. Rekha finds employment and falls seriously ill. Shankar comes to treat her and asks her to come and live with them. When Rekha refuses, Lata comes over and makes her change her mind, and as a result both Fohkat and Rekha move in Shankar's house - not realizing that their entry will result in a murder in the household - which will not only turn everyone's lives upside down but also throw open their individual lives to a public scandal.

At her deathbed, Mumtaz had made Jahan to promise that she will look after her dad, which she does. This responsiblity makes her sacrifice her love for Mirza. Mirza is heartbroken and continues to believe that Jahan will marry him someday, sooner or later, and roams around the region looking for her, and her elusive love for him

Saroja) tries to reform her brother, Arunagiri, so she arranged his marriage with Gnana Valli (Sharadha). And Arunagiri was feeling unhappy in his married life. He neglects his wife and continues in his bad ways. He persuades his sister to sell all their property and their house to get money for his dissipation. He reduces himself, his wife and sister to dire poverty. His sister gave him what ever money she earned herself, to make her brother happy. It was said that since he was used to enjoying his life in debauchery, he started to suffer from leprosy and people were avoiding him. There came a time when his sister had no money to meet his demands for his dissipated life. Arunagiri said he was going to end his life because of this. To prevent Arunagiri from killing himself, his sister says that he should sell her in order to have money for prostitutes.
