- Episode: (2001)2000–200243mTV-GTV EpisodeThe southern end of the Dead Sea is believed to be the ancient land of Canaan, site of the legendary cities of sin - Sodom and Gomorrah. According to the Bible, these cities, along with three others, were destroyed by fire and brimstone. But did these cities even exist? Were there really two cities called Sodom and Gomorrah that were so wicked they were utterly demolished by God? Generations of school children have been taught that it was the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD that brought about the Dark Ages. But new and startling discoveries suggest that Rome may have been just another victim. Could there be some clearly identifiable cause that sent the world into an age of ignorance, brutality, and poverty completely beyond the control of nations and governments? What brought about the decline of civilization?

But it now lies in silent ruins with no inhabitants left to explain what happened here -- or why. That's about to change. - The Golden Space City of God, combines elements from the Book of Revelation with science fiction imagery to describe events leading up to the end of the world. Though charged with the authority of religious fundamentals, Grayson's account does not intend to convey apocalyptic enlightenment; rather, it raises questions surrounding our models of interpretation. Within the context of contemporary economic and political environments, we begin to understand Grayson's presentation as an inquiry into the development of narrative, analyzing varying modes of communication and their role in establishing global systems. While the gestures in Grayson's Artpace installation are informed by his personal interpretation of communication systems, we can further understand the underlying message through the lens of Niels Bohr's concept of Complementarity. Bohr argued that an entity can be understood by differing models of interpretation, but these descriptions cannot coexist: the most famous example is perhaps light, which can be described in terms of waves or particles, but not both. The Golden Space City of God explores similar mechanisms in current political, cultural, and ideological spheres, where revolutionary theory is increasingly challenged by supernatural belief systems. Grayson's Artpace installation explores expressions associated with divine intervention and the lyrics reveal a multifarious account involving not only religious happenings, but also economic crises and the arrival of a giant golden spaceship.

- In the last of the series, Richard Miles examines the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. At the height of its power, the Roman Empire extended the benefits of its civilization to a 60 million citizens and subjects in a swathe of territory that extended from Hadrian's Wall to the banks of the Euphrates. But the material benefits of the 'good order' delivered by Roman rule provided its citizens and subjects with the security to ask profound questions about the meaning of life, questions that the pragmatic, polytheistic Roman belief system was ill-equipped to answer.

- The ancient site of Teotihuacan in central Mexico--which the Aztecs called the "City of the Gods"--is one of the world's greatest mysteries. To this day, no one knows who built the metropolis or what happened to its occupants, but based on evidence that has recently been unearthed, Ancient Astronaut theorists suggest it was once home to a highly advanced, perhaps extraterrestrial, civilization. The many structures that still stand in Teotihuacan appear to be encoded with advanced mathematical and cosmic principles, and the layout precisely mirrors the positions of the planets in our solar system. Modern excavations at the site have unearthed discoveries of liquid mercury, walls lined with mica, and strange golden-spheres containing unknown substances--all of which are out of place in the ancient world. Could these artifacts be the remnants of an alien society? Perhaps even an extraterrestrial spaceport?
