- Having finished with Caroline Jools turns up to tell Hannah that he wants to be her champion, even though she is dating Sam, in whose antique shop she now works. However when Faith and Paul go out to dinner with Hannah and Sam, not only does Sam want Paul to create fake antiques for him but belittles Jools and gloats about selling him an expensive ring he could ill afford. Suddenly Hannah discovers which of the two guys is her real champion and tells Sam what she thinks of him whilst resigning.
- Faith and Hannah are disappointed that their French boyfriends have not phoned so Faith turns to Paul as second best but he is not flattered. Eventually Gerard turns up but minus Rene,who has found another girlfriend. He and Faith go out for the evening with Paul and his ex-wife but Gerard sees that there is chemistry still between Paul and Faith and returns to France next day. The two teachers are about to indulge in some afternoon delight but are interrupted by Jools,performing motor-cycle stunts to try and cheer up Hannah.
- With her son Joe having left home and her divorce behind her college art teacher Faith is looking forward to life as a single woman so she is surprised when daughter Hannah returns from a year's globe-trotting - particularly since Faith moved house without telling her. Faith goes on a date with colleague Paul but their fumbling attempts at sex are disastrous and, coming home, Faith is put out to find Hannah asleep on her bed with a platonic male friend Nick. She agrees to another date with Paul but takes relaxing pills Hannah has brought back from India and falls asleep on Paul before they can do anything. Next morning Hannah suggests moving in with her mother permanently.
- Hannah decides to set up as an interior designer when she decorates Jools' new flat. Faith, feeling she is wasting her life when a younger colleague is head-hunted for an American university, announces that she wants to be Hannah's business partner and persuades Jill to let them turn her bedroom into a love nest. Artistic differences between mother and daughter dissolve the partnership but Faith is pleased when Gareth asks her to escort a party of students to a painting course in France - until she learns she was his last choice.
- Faith is surprisingly calm after seeing Paul kiss Hannah though she does suggest he pretends he is her boyfriend to persuade Hannah to move out. Come Saturday morning Faith gets an inconclusive result of a cervical smear test and is very worried but with Paul drunk, Hannah off with new boyfriend Sam and Caroline and Jools using the flat as a love nest, she gets little sympathy. Fortunately, Monday brings the all-clear and a little more understanding from those around her.
- Hannah is amused to learn that her mother has a young admirer, student Ben until he turns out to be a handsome hunk. When Faith reckons she is too old for him Hannah plays her play for Ben but is disappointed to be told that he prefers older women because of his inexperience. Paul throws Jools out after his band practice ruins a romantic evening he had planned with the younger Susie whilst Faith's son Joe turns up to announce that he has become a Young Conservative for love of a female party member. Ben's mother arrives to accuse Faith of being a seductress but Faith's protestations are somewhat blunted by the presences of the needy Joe and Jools.
- Faith is amused when Paul tries to cultivate a younger image before confessing that he is about to become a grandfather. Hannah finds herself softening towards Mark and hides her disappointment when it turns out that the bunch of flowers he brought to the house are for Faith and not her. After attending a party at Jools' flat Hannah wakes up on the bed next to him and is concerned that they had sex,especially when Harry suggests she took Jools as a lover substitute after rejection by Mark. She is thus very happy when Caroline reveals that nothing happened between them before they fell asleep.
- Paul comes round for the long-awaited night of passion so Hannah repairs to the pub where Jools introduces her to new boyfriend Gus. However, next morning Faith tells her daughter that Paul was rubbish in bed and the night was a disaster. At work, though she and Paul are civil with each other in the pub Faith gets drunk and tells Paul the truth, scaring Gus off when she returns home. She nevertheless gets a surprise when she meets Emma, one of Paul's very happy conquests. Jools meanwhile believes he is gay as girls don't fancy him but change his mind when he scores with Hannah's friend Caroline, despite her brutal husband Dave.
- The real Zoe finally arrives and turns out to be a strait-laced actuary but she and Faith get on extremely well, Faith even interrupting her romantic evening with Mark when Zoe drops in unexpectedly. Feeling left out Hannah becomes extremely jealous and sarcastic and, though she is now dating Harry turns to Jools for consolation.
- Faith decides to give up sex and drink but is tempted when Mark pays her more compliments. She tells Paul,who is off to France as an expectant grandfather. Caroline and Hannah go to see Jools' band but when the power goes off Jools proves to be a successful stand-up comic and is given a gig as a comedian. He wants Hannah to go and support him but she goes off on a training weekend with Harry and ends up in his hotel room for a night-cap.
- It is Faith's birthday and she is concerned that nobody will remember. However Hannah,now training to be a counsellor,organizes a surprise party for her and gets Paul,Caroline and Jools involved. After work Faith goes to the pub and is disappointed that none of her work colleagues have turned up for a birthday drink with her. However Paul shows up and drives her home for the party. Unfortunately she gets a very unwelcome surprise as a tree has fallen into the flat.
- Dumped by Gus Hannah is miserable and an offer to a darts match by Jools is small consolation. At college, Jill tells Faith she is leaving Mike as she thinks he is having an affair and moves in with Gareth. Faith sorts things out between them but, after her sojourn with Gareth, Jill has developed a taste for a lover and throws herself at an unsuspecting Jools. Hannah is turned down for three job applications on the grounds of being too old and is consoled by Paul. She misinterprets his paternal sympathy for something stronger and Faith catches them kissing.
- Hannah returns from her fling with Harry to find Jools has used her as material in his, highly successful, stand-up routine though she is not pleased. Faith, however, is delighted to go on a date with Mark and to start a courtship. Next day she receives a letter from Zoe, the daughter she had as a teenager and gave up for adoption and who is now anxious to meet her. Hannah is annoyed not to have been told about her before but agrees Faith should see her and so they both welcome the young lady who rings the bell - and who turns out to be a sales rep and not Zoe, who is unwell.
- Faith and Hannah take a group of elderly art students to a French chateau but Faith is irritated when Paul does not ring and Hannah is annoyed because Jools never stops,particularly as she and the owner's son Rene have decided they want to marry. Faith dismisses this as no more than a holiday romance until she falls for the charms of Rene's father,the handsome Gerard,though their night of passion is almost scuppered by Paul's surprise appearance.
- Mark comes round to whisk Faith away for a romantic weekend but, anticipating a family dinner with her daughters, she puts him off again and he walks out of her life. Paul returns from France with news of a wedding - though not to Faith his ex-wife through Faith does attend the ceremony in a rather large hat. With Zoe planning to move to Scotland Faith anticipates that she will be sharing the flat with Hannah, who has completed her course, but, having caught Harry cheating on her Hannah is off to India with Jools, leaving Faith to - hopefully - relish her independence at last.
- Faith moves in as a lodger to Paul but disrupts his ordered life-style whilst Hannah camps out in the damaged flat and,as she tells her course tutor Harry,she is not amused by the flattery bestowed on her by Mark,the builder come to assess the damage. She is even less happy when Caroline,having left Dave again,decides to move in with her and Jools arrives to saw up the tree and create sculptures - which he unsuccessfully tries to sell. Faith also returns but is rather taken by Mark's comments about her.
- Faith is thrilled when Hannah declares that she will be moving in with Nick and asks Paul round for sex but he is off to Newcastle for a job interview. Sympathetic work colleague Jill asks Faith to a dinner party where she is introduced to Steven, a man who rescues her from Jill's drunken husband Mike and suggests a date though Faith is put off by his being a fervent Christian. Her independence is short-lived when a tearful Hannah returns, after a girl with whom Nick was more than friends arrives from Australia. So, when Paul rings to say that he is back from Newcastle and free Faith has to say Thanks But No Thanks.
- Paul tells Faith he has a teen-aged daughter who lives with his ex-wife and is coming to visit. After an encounter with an amorous car mechanic Faith visits Paul and mistakes his much younger date for the daughter. Annoyed that Paul has been seeing somebody else she goes on a girls' night out with Hannah and Caroline, a friend also having man trouble. Arriving home Faith is confronted by Caroline's husband, who accuses her of leading his wife astray but is rescued by the mechanic. Chaos ensues as the other women return with pizza and Jools turns up to serenade Hannah with a love song.
- Faith is putting on weight and resisting Hannah's attempts to put her on a diet. She suggests to Paul that she may lose a few pounds if they have sex. Hannah reluctantly goes to see Jools play with his band Whitebait and is impressed how in control the normally clumsy boy is, kissing him goodnight. However next day he comes to see her with a present of a potted plant and manages to revert to type, falling over and when Nick returns from Australia she needs help from her mother to scare Jools away.
- Faith finds sharing the flat with Hannah difficult especially after she runs the car out of petrol so, to pay her way, Hannah takes a job as a life class model for Faith's married but skirt-chasing boss Gareth. She is annoyed when Nick, now the boyfriend, and his dim friend Jools find it sexual, however. Faith accepts a dinner invitation from Gareth, only to find his wife has been called away. Nothing happens but, as he takes her home and they have got through the door, he makes a play for her in front of the visiting Paul. As a result, they fall and he injures himself and Faith takes over the life class - but changes it to still life to spare her daughter's blushes.
- Hannah gets a job but it involves dressing as a giant pink mouse to promote cheese. Out painting, Faith meets charming antique dealer Ian, who asks her out but their date goes badly and she blames Hannah, who forced her into it after she had expressed doubts. Gareth asks Faith out for a drink in the guise of coaching her for promotion but she learns from Paul that this is just a ruse for him to hit on her. She goes home annoyed at the things people will do to get by in their jobs and is pleased when Hannah tells her she has quit the cheese promotion. Jools then decides to pack in his job delivering pizza.
- Faith is prone to hot flushes and believes she has flu but it turns out to be the menopause, which causes her to behave very strangely in public and ring the Menopause Hotline. Her sudden mood swings alarm Hannah who serves her HRT tablets but Hannah is annoyed as Nick is leaving for Australia and Faith is more concerned with her condition than comforting her. Jools, who is sweet on Hannah, comes to see her but somehow Faith ends up embracing him in front of her daughter.
