Megsie is a seemingly orphaned young teen living at a boarding school in the town of Rotten. She sets out on the journey of life across an urban fantasy landscape, attempting to find a heavenly city known as Hometown. Along the way she encounters a peculiar host of characters who personify the various thoughts, beliefs, and temptations of life, from the crooked Mr. Whirlywise to the materialistic Folly and Chitchat. With the help of the angelic Evangeline, heroic Leap, and a curious Firefly, Megsie finds herself on a journey of salvation and redemption, made all the more perilous by the evil Countess DeSeever and her plans to turn unsuspecting travelers into permanent ornaments.
