This documentary film comprises of interviews with five Vietnam War veterans in 1982 in prison for violent crimes committed after leaving the military, interwoven with film and television clips from the period. All five interviewed were decorated for bravery and none of the five men had a criminal record prior to going to Vietnam.

One night, high schools students Gina and Wayne have sex. Several weeks later during a student council meeting at school, Gina asks to open the office of student body president to girls as well as boys. The proposal passes and she is persuaded to run. Then Gina discovers that she is pregnant. She tells her mother and is stunned to learn that her mother got unexpectedly pregnant in high school before marrying Gina's father and Gina was the result. Her mother urges her to have an abortion. At first, Gina agrees, but then she decides not to go ahead with the abortion saying, "If my mother had done it, I wouldn't be here." Gina returns to school and in a campaign speech she tells the student body that she has learned responsibility and how to live with the consequences of what you do.

Roy is a robot mechanic holed away in a rundown barn, surrounded by rustic antiques melded with futuristic sensibilities. He is a man forgotten by society and spends his days tinkering at projects. A girl opens the door into his barn and asks Roy if he's the robot mechanic, to which he responds that he is. The girl then threatens Roy at gunpoint to fix her: a sex robot on the verge of shutting down for good.

Eddie has dropped out of school and has been hanging out at the beach, drinking, smoking marijuana with his pals. He sees no reason to build a future for himself because he feels it's all going to be destroyed in a nuclear war anyway. One day he gets caught in a riptide and is swept out to sea. He's picked up by a Japanese fisherman and his 17-year old granddaughter. The fisherman is an old man and a survivor of Hiroshima who has seen a lot in his life. Eddie starts to work for him. Living and working with them, Eddie is forced to reexamine his beliefs and consider if life is worth striving for.

A young literature student Andreas Alt (Mark Bellinghaus), works as a ghostwriter on the memoirs of a former, now elderly courtesan (Trude Breitschopf). Her granddaughter Josefine (Mia Martin) also lives in the dilapidated house with her. By reading the diary, reality and imagination mix in the imagination of the student, the roles of the two women.
